And the Times They Are a-Changin'...

 

The Ontario Council Annual General meeting and Conference began on the Friday evening with a welcome and greetings. Attendees were then entertained by the Elvis impersonator who took us back in time to the age of rock and roll. Music has a way of bringing forth memories of remember when... and songs that caused us to sway and sing along.

 

Ontario Council business included amendments to the OC Articles and By-Laws, By-Law VII on meetings and By-Law VIII on voting bodies. The Ontario Council Resolution proposed by CFUW Barrie and District on Essential and Urgent Educational Supports for Ontario's Children and Youth in Care. . . Read the whole story  

 

 

"Leadership - What Does it Look Like? What Does it Mean? and Are You on the Message?"

 

 

Nelson Mandela. Girl Guides. Susan Murphy.   Self Assertiveness. Visionary.

 

 

These descriptors were just a few of the elicited responses to the statement, "Provide a word, phrase or person which depicts leadership," by the attendees at Presidents' Leadership Workshop, an integral segment of the recent Ontario Council Annual General Meeting (AGM).

KEYNOTE ADDRESS

 

Theme: The Impact of the Built Environment on the Health of the Population And Other Public Health Initiatives for change affecting our Lives Now And in the Future

 

Speaker:  Dr. Charles Gardner

 

Dr. Charles Gardner, Medical Officer of Health, Simcoe-Muskoka, gave the  keynote speech on 'The Impact of the Built Environment on the Health of the Population, and Other Public Health Initiatives for Change Affecting our Lives Now and in the Future.¨

He described how our life expectancy has increased over the last 200 years because of the elimination of epidemics through improvements in hygiene, clean water, better nutrition and less crowded living conditions. Read the whole article

Senior Health Care

 Theresa Boyle, Health Writer, Toronto Star

 

Theresa Boyle's presentation gave answers to the question, "Where do my stories come from?" Often she writes articles based on stories from individuals seeking help to cope with gaps in the Health System. Sometimes there is poor communication between services, such as between hospital and home healthcare. She spoke of people needing answers in situations of medical malpractice and incompetence. In her position as a journalist she gets occasional opportunities to witness unusual procedures, Read the whole article

The Climate Reality Project Canada: Comprehending the Climate Crisis

Presenter: Dr. Bradley J. Dibble 

  

Dr. Bradley J. Dibble, a Barrie cardiologist, is one of more than 6000 volunteers worldwide personally trained by Al Gore, former US Vice President, to educate about the science and impacts of global warming and climate change using public presentations.

 

Dr. Dibble began by showing numerous photos of severe weather conditions that have occurred in the last few years around the world including floods, drought, tsunamis, tornadoes and major snowstorms.Read the whole article

 

New Partnerships: Aboriginal People and the Business Community

 

Presenter: Jean-Paul Gladu, President and CEO Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business

 

 

This was an excellent presentation. John Paul Gladu is a very good speaker, and began by telling us something of his own background. He grew up in Thunder Bay, off reserve, though his spiritual home is Sand Point, near Lake Nipigon. He now splits his time between Ottawa, where his wife and daughter live, and Toronto, where the CCAB is located. He holds both a diploma and degree in forestry, and an MBA.

 

The CCAB was founded thirty years ago, and includes Metis and Inuit as well as First Nations. Read the whole article
