Winter Storm Warning

A National Weather Service (NWS) Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow remains in effect for our area from 9 a.m. today through midnight tonight.  Intermittent snow is expected to continue through the morning, becoming more consistent and intense this afternoon. The most intense snowfall, with accumulation rates of an inch per hour possible, is expected this afternoon. Periods of intense snow will reduce visibility, and strong northeast winds (up to 20 mph with stronger gusts) may lead to blowing and drifting of snow. Snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches is expected, but locally higher amounts are possible. Traffic on the roads and intense snowfall may cause challenges for crews working to clear snow, and motorists should plan ahead and be prepared for hazardous driving conditions. Motorists should allow extra time for travel, and be sure to have appropriate emergency supplies, including a charged cell phone, in their vehicle.

The Lakemoor Police and Public Works Departments would like to remind residents and visitors in the Village of Lakemoor of the following winter parking restrictions and regulations.

Snow Parking Restrictions are in effect when two or more inches of snow has fallen. There is no parking allowed on all Village Streets. Vehicles in violation of this ordinance may be towed and the initial penalty for violating this ordinance is $50.00. Vehicle owners are responsible for all towing and storage costs.

Overnight Parking Restrictions are in effect between the hours of 2:00am and 6:00pm year round on all Village streets

Clearing of Sidewalks by property owners and occupants is required within 24 hours following the end of a winter storm.  The snow may not be shoveled, blown, dumped or otherwise placed on any public street or property.  Any violations of this ordinance should be reported to the Village @ 815-385-1117 or eService Request Click Here. Property owners / occupants may also be fined for violation of these ordinances.

Snow Removal Tips

Every year hundreds of people injure their backs, or worse, by removing snow. Snow removal may be a necessity, but it is also a physical activity that should be carefully undertaken. Here are some tips to prevent injuries and help you enjoy the winter. Follow these safety tips from the National Safety Council:

  • Dress warmly, paying special attention to feet, hands, nose and ears.
  • Avoid shoveling snow if you are out of shape. If you have a history of heart
  • trouble, do not shovel snow unless your doctor says it's okay.
  • Do light warm-up exercises and stretches before shoveling and take frequent
  • breaks.
  • If possible, push snow in front of you. If you have to lift it, pick up small amounts
  • and lift with your legs, not your back. Do not toss snow over your shoulder or to
  • the side.
  • Don't drink alcohol before or while shoveling snow. Never smoke while
  • shoveling.
  • Use rock salt or de-icing compounds to remove ice from steps, walkways and
  • sidewalks. Sand placed on walkways may also help prevent slipping.
  • If you use a snow blower, follow these safety guidelines:
    • Read the owner's manual before starting your snow blower. Make sure
    • you understand all the recommended safety steps.
    • Make sure all people and pets are out of the way before you begin.
    • Do not put your hand in the snow blower to remove impacted snow or debris. Turn the machine off and wait a few seconds. Then use a stick or broom handle to remove the material.
    • Do not leave the snow blower unattended when it is running.
    • Never let a child operate a snow blower.
    • Fill up with fuel before you start when the engine is cool.
