Welcome Back!

Many of you are coming back after a summer of cottaging, sailing, camping, golfing, and more!  It is so nice to have the studio back to a steady buzz!

As was mentioned in last months newsletter, the famous Mari Winsor is coming to the Precision Pilates studio on November 6th, 7th, and 8th.  For more formation on her visit click here.

I just returned from Toronto where I taught at Lili Viola's Pilates studio for the weekend. While there I assessed six apprentices who wish to join the Authentic Pilates Canada Teacher Training Program.  I will be going to Toronto six more times in the next twelve months teaching up to 10 new apprentices. I have one gal coming from North Carolina to study with me!  Exciting!

Adam Ridgewell, our Massage Therapist and Osteopath will be hosting two workshops in the coming weeks.  Please read below for more information.

The teachers schedules are quite full, but we have room to add more Private, Duet, and Trio clients as well as there is space in most class times.  Check out our awesome schedule on the website. Also, if you want to fit in extra workouts, Pilates Avatar is the way to go!  I've left the section in from the last newsletter so you can read it again if you were unclear how it works.

I look forward to catching up with all of you in the studio in the coming weeks!

The Muscle of the Month! - Abdominals!
by Allie Murchison

Summer is all about spending time with your friends and family and having a good time. With potlucks and BBQs we generally consume much more food than we typically will in our everyday life. Burgers and Beer, the summer fun food have indeed been fun, but now that summer is officially over (sorry to be the bearer of bad news) we have to get back into routine, and what better to do that with than PILATES.

This month our muscle of the month is the abdominal group. The muscles that we try to perfect year around for the summer months beach days.  Many people vie for a 6-pack, and although most of us had a few of those this summer, the Abdominal 6 pack is really for vanity.

However, all of the abdominal muscles play a crucial role in your everyday life, these muscles support and mobilize your structure, they are secondary breathing muscles, and they protect vital organs.

The abdominal muscles are made up of various layers that perform many functions. The Transverse abdominis is the deepest layer of abdominal muscle. It runs from pubic bone to rib cage and from belly button around to your spine.  It hugs your spine for stability and protection.

The next two layers of abdominal muscles are the obliques. You have Internal and External Oblique muscles.  They run in opposite directions and are attached from rib cage to pelvis on the side and front of your body. They aid in breathing by pulling the chest down and allowing for exhalation, they also aid in side bending and rotation of the trunk.

The muscle closest to the surface of your body is the rectus abdominis, this is what is often referred to as the six pack muscle.  This runs along the front of your body from ribs to pubic bone.  Its purpose is to flex the spine forward, aid in breathing, and helps to keep the internal organs intact.

While all these muscles all are different shapes and sizes they are all targeted in Pilates exercises both on the Mat and on all the Apparatus.

Just try coming to class and not feeling your tummy!!

Pilates Avatar!

You have heard us all talking and are probably wondering what the heck is a Pilates Avatar!  Are we going to turn into little Blue Pilates teachers?  No, that is not it.  Pilates Avatar is an audio and video resource that you as a client can use in conjunction with your private lessons and group classes to come to the studio more often yet at an affordable price!

How does it work?  You will work with your teacher to decide what level of Pilates Avatar is best for you. Over the course of 6-10 private lessons we will teach you the exercises, transitions, safety and more for that particular level.  Once we decide you are ready you will download your level from the Pilates Avatar website and begin practicing on your own!  If it is Matwork, you can do it anywhere at any time!  Just put the file on your iPod and lay down and workout!  If you are working on the reformer, you will download your workout, put it on your iPod and come to the studio to workout!  We have specific Pilates Avatar times on the schedule and you can register for whatever time suits your needs.  You'll be using the equipment along side of the other teachers teaching lessons.  Don't worry, we are supervising and we are here to answer your questions as you need.  Along with the audio download you will get the exercise list and order with repetitions, springs, equipment position etc.  You will come in to the studio to workout as often as you can. In 8-10 weeks you may be ready to move up a level depending how frequently you practice.

So what else is involved?  In order to take part in the Pilates Avatar with the equipment you must take a minimum of two private lessons per month to keep moving forward and improving.  If you are practicing Pilates Mat with the Avatar you should be coming to Mat classes as well.

What is the cost involved?  Pilates Avatar is a one time $25 download for your audio workout.  To come to the studio to use the reformer you pay the price of Mat class, a $20.00 drop in fee or you can just take a class off your Mat package.  So now you get to use the Pilates Refomer for the price of a Mat class!

Pilates Avatar will change your body fast, and allow you more flexibility in schedule.  Ask us if you have more questions!

Osteopathy and PosturePro Lecture
Adam Ridgewell

New in the Maritimes! PosturePro and Osteopathy. Your pain experience is sensory in origin.

On the 21st Sept and Oct 5th from 5-7pm, Adam will be presenting a lecture on fast-growing permanent, pain-relieving methods! Register by email now to reserve your place!

Finally, we are beginning to see results in the missed art of "sensory re-programming" (neuroplasticity) and a return to relatively normal, pain free movement. (Sensori-motor integration)

Our world has fast outgrown our support mechanisms, both on a personal and a global perspective. We have a problem!

We believe there is a growing need to have in place a set of "re-balancing stimuli" ALWAYS acting on our nervous system to get POSTURE right before anything else!

It is right here on your doorstep, although not obvious enough in Fredericton!!

Osteopathic principles dictate that Structure governs Function and vice-versa. Sensory stimuli govern action, both on a conscious and subconscious level.

These principles, along with muscle strengthening (shortening)/stretching (lengthening) cycles and associated movements e.g Pilates, your own healing mechanisms
have the best chance of being synchronised, for permanent relief!
