FOOD DRIVE & PIZZA FUNDRAISER

As we count our blessings this month, local nonprofits are seeking our help. From Nov. 1--30, The Village Family Services will be part of the Feed 4 More community food drive at the Whole Foods in Sherman Oaks. Feed 4 More is an annual community food drive sponsored by Whole Foods Market to fight hunger in the communities where they are located. Customers who shop at the Sherman Oaks location will have the opportunity to donate cash at the register to help purchase non-perishable food items. This donation of food will help support the children and youth served by The Village Family Services (thevillagefs.org).

Also, the nonprofit is partnering with MOD Pizza. Part of a fast-casual pizza chain based in Washington, MOD Pizza just opened in North Hollywood at 5300 Lankershim. In the campaign that will run from Nov. 25-30, $1 from every pizza sale will be donated directly to The Village Family Services. The campaign is called Spreading MODness, and it is their way of giving back to the communities they serve.

COLDS, FLU & EBOLA

"Remember the basics, wash your hands often, and sanitize your kitchen counters and work surfaces," Dr. Julio Meza stressed at our October Networking Breakfast. "In groups with access to good health care," he said, "people lose respect for diseases and lose perspective of basic things such as washing their hands and getting immunizations."

Infectious diseases have a chain of development, and if break or blockade one of the links, you stop the spread (at least for yourself and your surroundings).

Dr. Jose Meza, Medical Assistant Program Director, Terri Jackson, Past President, and Sheniqua Maefau pose after the October Networking Breakfast at Sportsmen's Event Center in Studio City.

Dr. Meza, program director for medical assistant education at Concorde Career College, was joined by his colleague, Sheniqua Maefau, an instructor at Concorde, to advise Chamber members on staying healthy and keeping their employees and families healthy this season.

As Sheniqua distributed fliers on handwashing, she asked, "Who really needs a handout on handwashing?"

"Trust me - everyone!" she answered. "Wash your hands before you cook, before you eat, before and after you use the restroom (depending on what you've been doing before). We know that 59% of adults in one study didn't wash their hands after using the restroom, which is a breeding ground for infection.

"Despite the Ebola virus concerns today, the main concern in health care is Hepatitis B, which can live on surfaces for 21 days."

Ron Dresher, is on the LAPD Advisory Board of Directors, Board of American Red Cross, Founder and Executive Director of the Life Transition Group and Past Baord Member of the City of Hope

Practical advice also came from Ron Dresher, a member of the Community Police Advisory Board and the American Red Cross board, who spoke on emergency preparedness. "It's not a matter of if, but when and where a disaster is going to happen," he said. "Being prepared can save lives and minimize injury, as well as preventing some property damage and keeping crime down."

We discussed emergency needs, food, a manual can opener, flashlight and batteries, a first aid kit, and lots of safe water. Dresher also talked about neighborhood mapping, and responsibilities when disaster occurs, when many neighbors might not be home. He distributed excellent Emergency Preparedness Guide booklets, making it a great day for useful (even lifesaving) handouts.

We also welcomed new member, Chris Camara, general manager for the new Regus offices opening in North Hollywood.

Hundreds of community members visited the Chamber's Fit4Business Fit4Life Health & Business Fair on Saturday, Oct. 18, at North Hollywood Park. They enjoyed wrestling demonstrations, Aztec dancers and face painting, kept Hula Hoops spinning, and participated in free health screenings and health and nutrition education.
