BuildingGreen: GreenCircle Will Label Products Eligible for LEED v4

A new certification will make it easier for project teams to locate products eligible for a LEED v4 credit that addresses ingredient disclosure and hazard screening (Building Product Disclosure and Optimization-Material Ingredients). Approved by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the certification program will allow manufacturers to label product literature as "LEED v4 Compliant." GreenCircle is the first third-party certifier reviewing documents such as manufacturers' inventories to ensure they adhere to LEED v4 standards. Read the full article here.

Participating Manufacturers Reach New Markets with
Multi-Attribute Label Pilot Program

As some of the largest purchasers of goods and services, federal agencies have long been at the forefront of sustainable procurement. Responding to mandates, executive orders, and internal goals, agencies such as the Department of Defense (DoD) and many others have collectively been looking for a method to simplify the sustainable procurement process for federal purchasers, and GreenCircle's Multi-Attribute Label Pilot Program is doing just that.

Recognized and encouraged by the DoD, the pilot program uses GreenCircle's Certified Environmental Facts multi-attribute label to display comprehensive product sustainability information in a simple, easy to read format. GreenCircle and participating manufacturers have been showcasing the Pilot Program at Sustainability Expos on military bases across the country. The response to the program has been overwhelmingly positive, with policy makers and procurement agents at various DoD installations finding that the label will help make better purchasing decisions and meet established procurement mandates.

Participating manufacturers are also finding value in the pilot program, with their multi-attribute certifications generating buzz in their existing markets in addition to receiving attention from federal purchasers. Superior Essex, a global leader in the communications cable industry and one of the first manufacturers to participate in the pilot, has been able to showcase its sustainability successes with its recent Multi-Attribute certification. "Our GreenCircle certification is invaluable in communicating the sustainability of our products and operations," says Eric Perry, VP Applications Engineering/Quality at Superior Essex. "The Certified Environmental Facts label speaks our customers' language and has allowed us to quickly break into this market with huge upside potential."

ASSA ABLOY Highlights Sustainable Manufacturing Practices with GreenCircle Certification

The global leader in door opening solutions, ASSA ABLOY, is setting the sustainability standard in its industry with its commitment to reduce environmental impacts through smarter products and advanced production methods. GreenCircle recently certified ASSA ABLOY's New Haven, CT facility for Sustainable Manufacturing Practices, recognizing its sustainability efforts and identifying achievements in waste diversion and reductions in carbon footprint, energy demand, and water use.

"Having our successes at the New Haven facility verified by a third party adds a level of accountability to our claims and demonstrates to our customers that we walk the talk," says Aaron Smith, Director of Sustainable Building Solutions, ASSA ABLOY. "We have made great progress at this plant and GreenCircle certification helps us tell that story while providing a benchmark for ongoing improvement."

The New Haven plant has implemented several initiatives to improve operational efficiency and lower its impact on the planet. Through installing LED lighting, optimizing building and production schedules, integrating an aggressive waste reduction program, and eliminating leaks and other inefficiencies, the New Haven plant has significantly improved overall performance. Since 2011, the facility has achieved a reduction in carbon footprint (Scope 1 and 2 emissions) of 48 percent, lessened its energy consumption by 38 percent, and reduced water usage and total waste by 41 percent. Waste reduction efforts include a 67 percent reduction in hazardous waste, in addition to a waste diversion from landfill rate of over 92 percent. With corporate-wide sustainability goals and a clear direction, the New Haven facility has developed a plan to further reduce impacts and continue to improve efficiency over time.
