Waste Diversion Clients at Industry Forefront

Waste Diversion from Landfill is becoming a key sustainable performance measure, and forward-thinking companies are finding innovative ways to reduce waste. Third-party certification not only assists in promoting current waste diversion achievements, but also establishes a benchmark to drive continuous improvement. Many GreenCircle clients are leading their industries and realizing substantial value from their waste diversion initiatives.

GAF Reinforces Position with Waste Diversion Certification

GreenCircle recently completed a Waste Diversion from Landfill certification for GAF's Myerstown, PA facility. Operating at a high rate of efficiency, the Myerstown plant generates low levels of waste (less than 1% of the plant's total output) and makes an effort to recycle all of its waste streams. Achieving a waste diversion from landfill rate of 83%, GAF's Myerstown plant is the first asphalt shingle plant in North America to acquire Waste Diversion from Landfill certification. "At GAF, we are committed to sustainability and transparency," says Tim Machelski, GAF's Senior VP of Manufacturing Operations. "Having our waste diversion rates reviewed and certified by a third party is a crucial part of our program, ensuring accuracy and reinforcing trust in our sustainability claims."

Merck Expands Waste Diversion Certification
to Two Additional Facilities

Following the recent success and realized benefits of the GreenCircle Waste Diversion from Landfill certification at its West Point, PA facility, Merck has expanded its certification scope to its Upper Gwynedd and North Wales facilities. As a result of several initiatives, and commitment from internal personnel, Merck is improving operational efficiency and has established internal goals to decrease the amount of waste sent to landfill. GreenCircle's waste analysis and detailed audit of downstream material management operations confirmed the following individual waste diversion rates for each facility in 2013:

  • Upper Gwynedd - 99%
  • North Wales - 81%
  • West Point - 84%

Merck will use the GreenCircle audit and certifications to continue to improve their internal and external waste management programs with a goal to improve these diversion rates for recertification in 2015.

"Our Waste Diversion from Landfill certification has provided significant value. Not only has it established a baseline for our facilities, but it has also helped us identify many opportunities for improvement. Utilizing their expertise, GreenCircle certification sets us apart in our industry and will help us make strategic decisions going forward." - Nancy Valaika, Director, Global Facilities Management

Superior Essex on the Path to Zero Waste

Committed to sustainability and responsible material management, Superior Essex International sought out GreenCircle to review and certify its waste diversion efforts at its Hoisington, KS facility. Providing an outside perspective, GreenCircle's waste audit identified successes and targeted areas of improvement in Superior Essex's waste diversion program. After achieving a validated waste diversion rate in Hoisington, Superior Essex will leverage its GreenCircle certification to advance its goal of becoming a zero waste facility.

"As a leading wire and cable manufacturer, Sustainability at Superior Essex is part of our strategy to provide long-term value. Part of this strategy is increasing the efficiency of our operations to reduce the amount of waste we generate and send to landfills. We believe that it is important to tell this story to our customers and demonstrate how Superior Essex is leading the industry in sustainable practices. GreenCircle certification is a powerful tool for communicating our successes and provides a firm backing for our market leadership position in sustainability." - Eric Perry, VP Applications Engineering/Quality
