Working together to make
change happen.

Greetings!

Three years ago, Parents. The Anti-Drug began addressing ways to keep the children in our community drug and alcohol free. Working in partnership with the public and private schools in Districts 106, 109, 112, and 113, we have sent out monthly e-mails with information and resources to parents.

Why do we do this? Because parents are key to keeping their kids drug and alcohol-free. Research shows that teens who consistently learn about the risks of drugs and underage drinking from their parents are 50% less likely to use drugs and alcohol.

Working together to make change happen

Although parents are key, it takes everyone in the community to make change happen.  By working together we can change the attitudes about underage drinking and drug use in our community among youth and adults and we can help create environments that discourage use.

Talk

Talk and listen regularly.  Your words and actions concerning drug and alcohol use really do make a difference in the choices they make.

Monitor

Keep track of alcohol in your home and make sure kids can't access it.  Never provide alcohol to anyone under the age of 21. It is easier for teens to choose not to drink when alcohol is not readily accessible.

Connect

Connect with other families.  Share information and concerns you may have. By working together we can give kids the support they need to resist underage drinking and drug use.

Knowledge is Power

Change occurs when people have the facts and the right tools.  Thanks to our partnerships with the schools and other community agencies, we can empower other parents and adults with access to knowledge and the resources needed to address the issue of drugs and alcohol with their teens.

Change takes time and that is why it is so important that everyone in the community continue to deliver the message that underage drinking and drug use is not OK.  The message should be the same whether teens hear it at home, at school, in places of worship, on the sports field, in youth programs, or in other places where youth gather.
