Request for Applications: American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant

Applications Due: Wednesday, November 5, 2014

The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center (RHLCCC) is soliciting cancer-related research proposals from junior faculty who are within 6 years of their first independent faculty appointment, and who do not presently have a national research grant (K award recipients are eligible).  Proposals will be funded by an American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant (ACS-IRG) awarded to the Cancer Center in 2011.  The intent of this American Cancer Society grant is to allow junior faculty to generate preliminary data which can be used to attract national funding for cancer-relevant research.

The Cancer Center will fund three proposals this year.  Two awards will support cancer-relevant projects in any of the following categories: basic/preclinical research, clinical research, or population research.  The third award will fund a cancer-relevant project in one of the following categories: 1) psychosocial and behavioral research, 2) health policy or services research, 3) cancer in poor and/or underserved populations, or 4) childhood cancers.  Projects will be funded for one year at up to $30,000. Recipients of ACS-IRG awards in 2013 or 2014 may apply for a second year of funding for the same project.  However, these applicants must meet the same eligibility requirements as first-time applicants.

Using Ariel 11 font throughout, please use the form here to prepare the application.  Full information regarding other support is very important.  In the research description, which should be limited to 5 pages, please include an abstract, background, preliminary data (not required, include if available), research design and methods, relevance to cancer, and possible future directions.  Where applicable, include a plan for data analysis.  Applicants applying for a second year of funding must also include a progress report, limited to two pages.  The progress report should list the status of any grant applications, presentations, or publications which have resulted from the first year of ACS-IRG funding.  Do not include any important information in an appendix, as appendices may not be distributed to reviewers.  In the budget, please do not request permanent equipment costing more than $2K or salary support for yourself.  You may request salary support for technicians, postdoctoral fellows, etc.  Please note that these awards are restricted to U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, or permanent residents.

Non-tenure track faculty are eligible to submit applications, provided that they have their own research space, an independent research program, and future plans to apply for national funding.  A letter from the head of the research group with which these applicants are associated, affirming that these provisions are met, must accompany the application.

Applications must be submitted electronically to Benette Phillips ([email protected]), by Wednesday, November 5.

These applications will be reviewed by an internal IRG committee, chaired by Dr. Leonidas Platanias, Director of the RHLCCC and PI of the ACS-IRG.  Grant recipients will be notified in December.  It is strongly recommended that requests for IRB/ACUC approval be initiated at the time of application.  Although approval information is not required in the application, funds cannot be made available until such approval is obtained.
