The Interdisciplinary Approach Leads to Success
A Patient Shares Experience of CNNH's "Interdisciplinary" Care Model

CNNH Experts brainstorm about patient care. |
What is so special about an "Interdisciplinary" approach? What does "Interdisciplinary" even mean? This is a term that we use frequently at CNNH because it is the foundation upon which the organization was built. In essence, it means looking at a patient through different, but equally important, "lenses" to fully investigate and understand a patient This comprehensive approach leads to more accurate treatments and successes.
At CNNH, our interdisciplinary team includes professionals from various disciplines who understand and evaluate brain functioning from different perspectives. Medical doctors (neurologists/neuropsychiatrists), neuropsychologists, behavior analysts and creative arts therapists come together to evaluate a patient and then actively discuss the results with one another. This can lead to clarity and quality of life for the patients we treat and their families. It might best be understood in the context of a real patient's success story, like Jamie from South Jersey...
"When my son entered sixth grade - middle school! - things sort of fell apart. I knew something was wrong but I didn't know what it was or what to do about it. We tried going to several professionals, but without any progress or improvement. I asked my pediatrician what I should do, and they recommended CNNH."
The family brought their son to see a neurologist at CNNH. He did a comprehensive neurological evaluation and spent nearly two hours with the family taking a family history, learning about his diet, sleep patterns and listening to their concerns. Given the child's struggle in school, the neurologist suggested a neuropsychological evaluation.
"After performing comprehensive neurological and neuropsychological evaluations, the CNNH team 'peeled back the layers' until they found what was causing my son's distress. Using information they obtained from my son's medical history, learning and thinking styles and specialized brain and genetic testing, the CNNH team was able to 'think outside the box' and prescribe a comprehensive treatment plan that really works, both at home and in school."
The family embarked on a journey with their son, but in the end realized the journey benefitted all of them.
"The CNNH team found that anxiety in our family was not just a psychological problem, but had neurological and genetic causes that were treatable! Since there was a genetic cause discovered we looked even further and learned that my daughter and I also had treatable conditions. So the visit for my son also changed and dramatically improved my daughter's and my life!"
