14th Annual Benefit by the Sea
Sets Fundraising Record

Pictured above are Susan St. Martin and Board Treasurer Joe St. Martin at this year's Benefit by the Sea.

On May 7, 2016 Cross Roads House held its 14th annual "Benefit by the Sea" Gala which set a new event fundraising record for the agency, with net proceeds of over $320,000! Three quarters of the funding for Cross Roads House comes from private donations.

For fourteen years, local businesses and community members have stepped up to help their neighbors in need by sponsoring the Cross Roads House gala and providing critical operating revenue. Proceeds for this year's gala came from sponsorships, donations, ticket sales and guests in attendance were given an opportunity to make a pledge during a "fund-a-need" portion of the evening after viewing a short video (see below). Two hundred and ten people attend the formal event and enjoyed a sit down dinner and dancing to the Center Stage Band.

The event included a tribute to Jim McCarthy, a Cross Roads House board member who died last October. McCarthy had served on the board of directors since 2010, as treasurer for three years and a member of the finance committee. During the event, the Cross Roads House Board of Directors made a collective gift of $15,000 in memory of Jim.

Thank you to all the sponsors and donors who helped us exceed our goal this year! Your generosity makes it possible for us to fulfill our mission to help our residents break the cycle of homelessness and move with dignity and purpose to decent, stable housing.

A special thank you to Sean Tracey Associates for producing another amazing video for us. Every year, Sean and his crew do a wonderful job capturing the stories of our residents so that we can share them with the community. The newest video tells the story of Nathan, who arrived at Cross Roads House alone and hoping to reunite with his two young children. With the assistance of his case manager, Nathan was able to connect with a multitude of community resources and put his family back together. Last winter, Nathan and his family moved into their own home.

Exciting New Programs
Coming to Cross Roads House

Cross Roads House is excited to announced two new programs that will be implemented in the upcoming year.

The first, will be the addition of a Housing Stability Case Manager to the shelter's existing case management team. Currently, shelter residents are assigned a case manager while they stay at Cross Roads House, but there has never been formal follow-up or support for people after they move out. According to Executive Director Martha Stone, "This new case manager will work with people to help them address crises that arise, maintain the supportive services that were set up while they were at the shelter, teach them to advocate for themselves, and work with landlords to ensure that tenants remain in their new homes. We are confident that this new support will have a tremendous impact and reduce the number of people who have to return to the shelter."

This new position will be funded in its first year by a $25,000 grant from the Entrepreneurs' Fund of New Hampshire (EFNH). The grant was awarded during the first of three regional EFNH AMP NH Award Competitions on April 28. Click here for more information.

The second new initiative is a HUD funded program that will provide permanent supportive housing for individuals who are chronically homeless. This program will include a case manager who will help people obtain and maintain housing and supportive services. Stone explains that, "This is a Housing First model that provides a permanent rental subsidy and much needed continuing case management support for some of our most vulnerable clients with the most challenging situations. Many of the people who will benefit from this program have significant disabilities and have been bouncing between shelters and living outside for years. To get them settled in safe, secure housing with supports in place will be a huge accomplishment."

Cross Roads House continues to expand and enhance programs and services in an effort to break the cycle of homelessness. "The ability to implement these new programs would not be possible without the ongoing support of the community," added Stone.
It's Summer Time!!

Two of our young residents enjoying some arts and crafts time at the shelter.

The weather is getting warmer and the school year is coming to a close. That means it is time to prepare for the summer season at Cross Roads House.

Summer presents some unique challenges for our residents. Our families need assistance purchasing new summer clothing for their growing children, as well as summer camp supplies like swimsuits, sunscreen, and bug spray. Our adult residents will also be spending more time outdoors in the sun and heat and may need assistance staying protected from the elements.

You can help us make sure all Cross Roads House residents have a fun and safe summer by donating the following items:
  • Walmart gift cards (for children's clothing and shoes)
  • Gas cards for transportation
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Beach towels
  • Ice packs
  • Water bottles
  • Rain ponchos
  • Lunch boxes
Donations can be dropped off at the shelter, 600 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, NH, at any time.
