"It's a fresh slate for all of us."
Paul, Melissa, and their children on their last day at Cross Roads House.

Melissa, Paul, and their three children arrived at Cross Roads House in late November 2014. Melissa said her family became homeless when she lost her job and the family was unable to afford rent.

"I lost my job and I was trying to pick up another job, but it wasn't nearly the hours or the pay. About two months later we got evicted because we couldn't pay the rent. The small job I had at the time did not pay enough. It was barely enough for diapers. I took something because it was better than nothing, but ... financially it just wasn't enough."

Throughout their stay at Cross Roads House, Melissa and Paul worked closely with their case manager Kelly to set goals and connect with community resources. "It's someone giving you positive motivation and positive accountability. She helped with a lot of the overwhelming housing paperwork. We're still working on getting my son [disability benefits] for his autism."

In late October, the family moved to permanent housing.

Melissa said she was excited to start over in their new home. "It makes you proud that you're back on track - that no matter how little money you do have, you're using that money to pay your bills and keep that roof over your kids' heads. It brings that sense of pride back. Like you're providing for your family a little bit better now."

Melissa is proud of all the hard work she and her family did to get back on their feet. "I feel like we worked hard to get here. I think it's a fresh slate for all of us."

With your help, Cross Roads House can continue to help people like Melissa and her family get back on their feet and into permanent housing.

There is still time to make a tax deductible donation to Cross Roads House before the end of the year. We rely on the generosity of the community to provide shelter, food, programs and supportive services to families and individuals experiencing homelessness in the Seacoast area. This year, three quarters of our funding will come from private donations.

You can donate online or by check to Cross Roads House, 600 Lafayette Rd, Portsmouth, NH 03801.
