"I had been living in my car for three months."
|
| |
Pictured above is an emergency shelter room. During a portion of her stay here, Deb was in a room much like this one with eleven other women.
|
Deb was living with her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren, but when they divorced, she found herself without a place to stay. She reflects on her experience, "I didn't really think it was going to happen. I've never in my whole life been in this situation."
Deb arrived at Cross Roads House in August. She was 59 years old and had been living in her car for three months. Somehow, Deb had managed to continue working full-time at a local retailer throughout this time.
She remembers the difficulty of adjusting to life in the shelter. "The challenge was trying to get sleep. It's hard because I work overnights and when I come back here in the morning, that's my night, so I 'm backwards."
Deb was able to move into the transitional shelter program, which provided her with more private living quarters. She was able to continue working full-time, regulate her eating and sleeping schedule, and save for a place of her own.
Deb worked with her case manager, Sam, to find permanent housing. Deb says, "She and I have worked very hard to get me into an apartment. She's been fantastic."
At the end of March, Deb moved into an apartment of her own. She is looking forward to spending time with her family and sleeping soundly in her own space.
