Nineteen and on his own
Craig arrived at Cross Roads House in early December. Although only 19, Craig had not been stably housed for years. When he no longer had friends and family to stay with, members of his church told him about Cross Roads House.
Before he arrived, Craig had some misconceptions about what his life at Cross Roads House would be like. "I thought I was going to hoard my [things], ... sleep with one eye open. I didn't think I was going to be safe here, but I feel safe."
As soon as Craig arrived, he started looking for work. Craig has been employed at one or more part time jobs for his entire three month stay at Cross Roads House. This week he starts a full-time position. "I've had three jobs since I got here. I've never slacked. There is absolutely zero question about working."
Craig has been working with his case manager, Jason, setting and attaining goals that will lead to permanent housing. "He's understanding. He treats me like a human being. He doesn't treat me like I'm his job. Goals are being met. I've been saving money. I've been able to prosper here and make some goals and achieve them."
Craig says that he is working on building a foundation for himself right now so that when he leaves Cross Roads House he will not return to the shelter. "It's really easy to fall when you have something to fall back on. I don't have anything to fall back on."
Craig is looking forward to moving into his own place and continuing to work. He hopes to save up for a car soon. Reflecting back on his time at Cross Roads House, Craig says, "It's kind of a weird thing to say in this situation, but everything kind of fell into place in a way I didn't think it would."
