Surrendering a Pet:

One of the Many Challenges of Homelessness

Sammy the cat
Freddy will likely find a safe and secure permanent home long before his owners will.

On a recent day at Cross Roads House, a mother and her fourteen-year-old daughter arrived seeking shelter. With them, was their pet Freddy, a one-year-old cat who was nestled in his cat carrier. Sadly, we are unable to accommodate residents' pets and Freddy had to be surrendered to a local animal shelter. We worked together with the NHSPCA to try to create a plan for the family to reunite with Freddy.

The reality is that Freddy will likely find a safe and secure permanent home long before his owners will. While we do everything we can to assist our residents in their effort to find permanent housing, this typically takes months. Affordable housing is scarce and our residents frequently have multiple other challenges that need to be addressed as well.

Your support provides resources that allow our case managers and staff to work with people like Freddy's owners. Beyond being an emergency shelter, Cross Roads House offers a transitional program that provides individuals and families the opportunity to break the cycle of homelessness and return to permanent housing.

Volunteer Orientation

March 20, 2013

Ian and his Nanna prepare a meal together at home for our residents. Cooking at home is a great option for volunteers who want to involve their children. Please note that on-site volunteers must be at least 15 years old.

Have you ever considered volunteering at

Cross Roads House?

Seven nights a week,

our volunteers prepare and serve dinner to our residents.

Find out how you too can become a volunteer by attending our next Volunteer Orientation on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, from 5:30-6:30 pm at our shelter; see parking directions below.  The orientation will include a shelter tour, an overview of kitchen operations, and volunteer expectations.

Pre-registration is not required to attend.

Please note:

Our parking lot often fills up during orientation.
