Welcome to our new STM Teachers!
Pre-Kindergarten

Mrs. Baney received her B.A. in Education at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA and earned a multiple subject teaching credential from Point Loma College in San Diego, CA. Mrs. Baney will be teaching pre-kindergarten this year. She has taught preschool, kindergarten, and second grade in both public and Catholic schools. She is thrilled to be joining STM after being home with her youngest child for a few years. As far back as she can remember, Mrs. Baney has always wanted to be a teacher. At the age of eight, she rounded up the younger children in her neighborhood and taught "school" on her back patio. She is blessed to be living her dream! Mrs. Baney lives in Alexandria with her husband and two sons, aged 16 and 6. She also enjoys playing tennis on her USTA team.

Mary Kate Newell
Ms. Mary Kate Newell graduated from Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia with an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education. This is her first year teaching and is very excited about the opportunity to be a Kindergarten teacher at Saint Thomas More!
Ms. Newell believes - "A Teacher takes a hand, opens a mind, touches a heart and shapes the future."

Mrs. Burke was a Kindergarten Aide in Fairfax County Public Schools last year, but has taught Kindergarten and First grade. In addition, she was a Pre-Kindergarten Aide for 3 years.
The teachers throughout her education have inspired her to be a teacher. She knew she wanted to be a teacher in the third grade. She has worked with children her whole life and knew this was her calling. The best moment for her is the "ah-ha" moment when a student understands a concept as well as their joy and enthusiasm.

Ms. Sally Newell graduated from La Salle University with a degree in elementary and special education. This will be her first year teaching and is looking forward to the opportunity to teach first grade at STM. What inspired her to become a teacher were the many wonderful teachers who taught her in elementary school. She knows that watching her students' excitement about learning has become the best part of teaching!
Third Grade Raylene Rozzi
Mrs. Rozzi graduated from California State University, Fresno with a B.A. in Communicative Disorders- Education of the Deaf. She taught second grade in her home state of California before moving to Maryland and teaching third grade for six years for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). While on extended maternity leave from MCPS, she taught at her children's preschool for five years and was Assistant Director of the preschool for three years.
Mrs. Rozzi began substitute teaching at St. Thomas More Cathedral School two years ago and soon realized how much she missed being in the elementary classroom. She is looking forward to working with the supportive, professional, and caring teachers, staff, and parents that make up our diverse school. Her four children all attend St. Thomas More Cathedral School.
Mrs. Rozzi believes every student deserves to be respected, encouraged, and to feel safe. She strives to meet the individual needs of her students through differentiated instruction, high expectations, and open lines of communication with parents.
Fourth Grade Cathe Fonzi
Mrs. Fonzi received her undergraduate degree from San Diego State University with a B.S. Child Development and she has graduate level teaching credentials from the University of California, Irvine.
She is excited about joining the St. Thomas More Faculty and looks forward to a great school year! Mrs Fonzi will be teaching 4th grade and this will be a new experience for her. She has always been drawn to teaching and delights in witnessing the "aha" moments in her students. She is honored to play a role in the Catholic education of children.

Fifth Grade
Malia Buzekrus Mrs. Busekrus was born and raised in Hawaii and always knew she wanted to be a teacher.
As a 5 year old, she would "play school" with the neighborhood children and made sure she was always the teacher. She attended the University of Hawaii where she received her degree in Elementary Education. After teaching for a few years in the Hawaii public school system, she was blessed to have the opportunity to homeschool her six children for 5 years. For the past 6 years, she taught 5th grade at St. John Vianney School, a Catholic school in Hawaii. This summer, Mrs. Busekrus, along with her husband of 21 years and her children, moved to Virginia. She is delighted to be teaching 5th grade at St. Thomas More and her greatest desire is to help students love learning and grow to know, love, and serve the Lord even more than they already do.
