PKMS Holds 2015 National Junior Honor Society Induction

Congratulations to our many PKMS students who were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society on May 12! The evening's honorary inductee was long-time PKMS social worker Mrs. Nancy Ehrlich who will be retiring at the end of this school year. Honor society members presented Mrs. Ehrlich with a certificate and stole before asking her to add her name to the list of inductees. In other exciting news from the evening, we want to give a shout out to inductee Mya Turner who is the first student in over a decade of questioning to solve Dr. Licopoli's famous ladybug riddle!

PHS Drama Club Presents, "The Wiz"

The Peekskill High School Drama Company had an amazing three night run when they performed, "The Wiz" earlier this May with the help of some of Hillcrest's "munchkins." If you were there, here's a chance to relive the awesome experience and if you weren't able to make it, enjoy this taste of what was missed. Bravo to the talented cast and crew for a job well done!

Peekskill's Anthony Hull Honored at Student Advocacy Awards Ceremony

Congratulations to PCSD senior Anthony Hull who was one of only four students in Westchester County to recently receive the Overcoming the Odds awards from Student Advocacy, an organization which helps struggling students obtain the help they need to succeed in school.

The awards ceremony, which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, was held on May 14 in Tarrytown, NY. Hull, who attends Dr. Kenneth Clark Academy, was accompanied to the ceremony by his grandparents, parents, Peekskill Board of Education President Douglas Glickert and Peekskill City School District Director of Special Services Joyce Long.

Hull was honored by Student Advocacy for his persistence in pursuing his education after experiencing several difficulties throughout his academic career.

"In the last two years he has turned his academic transcript and his life around" read Hull's narrative in the award ceremony's program. "He has become a strong advocate for himself and a role model for others."

Hull will be receiving his Regent's diploma this June and will be attending Moorehouse College in the fall to study psychology.

Oakside Students Raise Funds for Clean Water Project

Last year Teresa Ferreira's third grade class raised over $250 to help drill wells in order to bring clean water to the people in South Sudan. This year, Ferreira's class is once again collecting donations for the same cause. The students have created posters advertising their fundraiser and posted them around the school and have written letters persuading others to donate. For more information about how you can contribute to this cause, please contact tferreira@peekskillcsd.org.

Book Buddies Program Brings PCSD Students Together

Peekskill Middle School students from Rachele Rice's Period 2 class recently took a walk to Woodside Elementary to read to the school's Kindergarteners as part of Rice's Book Buddies program. Upon arriving at Woodside, the middle school students broke into small groups and paired up with children from Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Kadin's classes. After reading to the Kindergarteners, PKMS students asked their younger counterparts what they enjoyed about the books.

"This is what it's all about- students bonding through literature," Rice said. "I'm so proud of my class. They were so excited to do this and many of them have already asked me when we are going back again."

Rice says she is looking forward to continuing the program next school year.

PKMS Welcomes IBM Engineers for Women in Technology Program

Guest engineers from IBM recently visited Peekskill Middle School for their 7th Annual Women in Technology Program. During the event, over 35 female students were challenged to build a website for a hypothetical start-up business. IBM instructors taught the girls how to construct a basic website design while students also learned the foundations of HTML coding and discussed technology related careers.

Thank you for sharing your gifts with us.

PKMS Hosts 2nd Annual Career Day

PKMS recently held their annual Career Day and welcomed guest speakers from a variety of professions. Students heard from fire fighters, police officers, and engineers as well as those who work in retail and communications. Even Peekskill's Mayor, Frank Catlina stopped by for a visit. Thank you to all of our speakers who volunteered their time to help inspire our students' futures!

PKMS Students Visit Fishkill's

Sharpe Reservation

PKMS 6th graders recently took a trip to the Sharpe Reservation in Fishskill which boasts over 2,300 acres of beautiful land with lakes, ponds, streams and hiking trails. The reservation welcomes over 10,000 students annually and helps to teach children about our local environment.

2015 PCSD Art Show at WCC
