Members of the PHS Girls' Softball Team recently visited Oakside Elementary classrooms to read aloud to students. After reading to Oakside students, PHS athletes answered questions about sports, college and eating healthy.

PHS Celebrates Arbor Day with Tree Plantings

Peekskill High School's Environmental/Gardening/4-H Club recently held their 2nd Annual Arbor Day Celebration which involved planting numerous new trees throughout the Peekskill City School District.

On the morning of April 24, PHS club members visited Woodside Elementary to join some of our younger students in planting two trees at Woodside's campus. Later that day, three trees were planted during an Arbor Day ceremony at PHS. This time, joining the PHS club members were Woodside students from Ms. Holloman's Kindergarten class.

Together students sang songs, recited Arbor Day facts and read poems all relating to the day's theme.

"Last year we had our first Arbor Day celebration with a Proclamation from the mayor's office and we had most of our groundwork for the event set up then," said Josephine Williams, the Club's advisor. "This year we moved to a different level where we were able to involve some of the children from the lower grade levels. Today's activities were a success because we worked together to achieve our goals."

The event was made possible thanks to a grant award from the Peekskill Education Foundation as well as various other pledges and sponsors, including Nukem Energy, Peekskill Parks and Recreation members, 4-H members, Conservation Advisory members, and PHS staff and alumni.

"Planting a tree is an act of kindness and a sign of optimism," Williams said. "The celebration of Arbor Day presents a priceless opportunity for everyone to take positive action and make the world a better place.  We need to keep this tradition going at Peekskill and start exposing our children to these concepts and values at an early age so it becomes a part of their lives. When the community works in partnership with the schools supporting our children and working alongside them, we are creating a better school and producing more responsible and successful citizens."

PKMS Students Plan for High School During PNW BOCES Tech Center Tour

Forty eighth grade students from Peekskill Middle School recently had the opportunity to travel to the Yorktown BOCES Tech Center to tour classrooms and facilities while examining their future options for 11th and 12th grade study.

While on their visit, PKMS students participated in classroom lessons and were engaged in hands-on activities associated with a variety of BOCES programs. Peekskill students were able to test their skills at using medical instruments in the Medical Assistant program. They were also able to try bending pipes in the Construction Electricity program and use microscopes to study plants and animals in the New Visions Environmental Science and Sustainability program.

"The students had a wonderful time and asked lots of questions," said PKMS teacher, Scott Tabone who accompanied the students on the trip.

Special thanks to Mr. Tabone for these photos from the trip!

PHS Outstanding Senior Athletes Named by PCSD Coaches

Congratulations to Naim Mickens and Aubrey Dabbs who were voted by all PCSD coaches as the outstanding senior male and female athletes of the year. They will be honored by the Peekskill Rotary Club at their club's June meeting.

Speaking of Mr. Mickens, we are excited to announce that he will be trying out for the University of Hartford's Men's Lacrosse team next fall! Check out this MSG Varsity video on our talented student by clicking clicking here.

Summit Academy Welcomes Columbia's Dr. Radley Horton

The PHS Summit Academy recently welcomed Dr. Radley Horton as their Earth Day speaker. Dr. Horton is an Associate Research Scientist at Columbia University's Center for Climate Systems Research, as well as a lead author for the 2014 National Climate Assessment among many other accomplishments. He spoke about future challenges arising from climate change, as well as opportunities for improving cities and communities. Students asked him about careers in solar energy, the future of the Metro North Hudson Line, and what each of us can do today to combat the trend of global warming. Dr. Horton urged students not to underestimate our impact and to do whatever we can to reduce our use of fossil fuels.

PKMS Environmental Club Promotes Sustainability in Symposium Project

Last month was a busy one for the Peekskill Middle School Environmental Club! First, they presented at the 2015 Wheelabrator Symposium, then they were also able to share their research project on Lake Mitchell at the Green Expo. Toss in a trip to the Smithsonian and an awards dinner and it's safe to say this has all been a series of exciting experiences that our students will never forget.
