Congratulations to our Lady Red Devils Varsity Basketball Team who put up a commendable fight in the Section 1 Class A Playoffs. After triumphing over Rye in the first game, our girls fell by a few points (56-49) to Albertus Magnus. We are very proud of their exceptional season and professional sportsmanship. Keep up the great work, ladies!

 NYSSBA Honors Several Peekskill

BOE Members

Congratulations to Peekskill Board of Education members Maria Pereira, Lisa Aspinall-Kellawon, Michael Simpkins, Colin Smith and Douglas Glickert who were honored by the New York State School Board Association's "School Board U" Recognition Program at a recent Board meeting on February 24. NYSSBA's School Board U program is designed to recognize "the extensive time and effort of Board members who strive to continually expand their governance knowledge and skills."

The Peekskill City School District thanks all of our Board members for their hard work and dedication, and once again congratulates our honorees.

PHS Students Hold Debate About Peekskill's Red Devil Mascot

Members of the Peekskill High School Debate Club, in conjunction with the PHS Student Council, held a public debate recently regarding Peekskill's Red Devil mascot. Students discussed many issues surrounding the topic, including the portrayal of the mascot in illustrated form, the notion of school tradition and the separation of church and state. We thank our student panel for their efforts and also thank the students and community members who attended and voiced their opinions at the event.

*Please note that this event was held as a matter of scholarly debate only. The Peekskill City School District and the Peekskill Board of Education previously released the following statement:

"The Peekskill City School District Board of Education and Administration have not considered nor discussed any proposal regarding the removal of the District mascot. Moreover, the Board of Education and Administration are, unequivocally, not proposing a change to the District mascot nor has a proposal for such a change been brought to our attention..."

PHS and PKMS Students Receive Free Tickets to View, "Selma"

Students from Peekskill Middle School's DREAM program and Peekskill High School's PACE program recently had the opportunity to travel to the Cortlandt Town Center to view the movie "Selma," in celebration of Black History Month.

Both groups received free tickets to the movie, which is about a key moment in the civil-rights movement during the 1960's, through an initiative started by IBM executive Michael Littlejohn of the Beta Zeta Boule' Foundation. After seeing the film himself, Littlejohn joined a nationwide effort to share the film with young people and helped raise over $70,000 to purchase movie tickets for students in Westchester County.

"It was a very rewarding experience for all of those involved," said PKMS PTO President Yolanda Guardino, who was one of the chaperones on the trip. "The students really enjoyed the movie and we are extremely thankful for the tickets."

Student Projects at Woodside Highlight the Lives of African Americans Throughout History

Students in Ms. Holloman's class recently presented a variety of research projects highlighting the lives of famous African Americans throughout history in honor of Black History Month. The class even welcomed a few special guests to watch their presentations- Mayor Frank Catalina, Superintendent Dr. Larry Licopoli, Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education Mary Foster, Principal Rolando Briceņo and students' parents all watched as the children proudly presented their projects.

Summit Academy Welcomes Special Guest Speaker Reverend Jeannette Phillips

Summit Academy Humanities classes enjoyed a visit from Reverend Jeannette Phillips in honor of Black History Month. Rev. Phillips spoke eloquently about her life in Peekskill, where she helped to found Hudson River Health Care for which she remains a Board Member. She is also the Associate Pastor of the Park St. A.M.E. Zion Church. Accompanied by her daughter in law, she shared many awards and artifacts with the students and reflected on her childhood in Spanish Harlem and Florida. She shared her memories of many marches and demonstrations for civil rights, jobs, health care, and education, and urged the students to keep on marching and working together for social justice.

(Special thanks to Mrs. Prentice for the pictures and event information).

New Library, Smartboards and More

at Uriah Hill

Uriah Hill students have been busy bees lately! In addition to their regularly scheduled fun and learning, students' days have been filled with some extra special activities, such as Movement Classes with Miss Elisha and monthly Mad Science class with, "Neutron Nancy." Dentist Dr. Martinez also paid the students a visit recently to show them how to care for their teeth. As if things couldn't get more exciting at Uriah Hill, our smallest students have a new library and now have access to three new interactive Smartboards. Both teachers and students are looking forward to getting more Smartboards soon.

PHS Art Students Prepare Work for Garrison Art Center's

"Rolling' on the River" Event

At Peekskill High School, Heather Brown's students will once again be participating in Garrison Art Center's annual "SITE- School Invitational Theme Exhibition "Rollin' on the River" Roll! Stamp! Print!" from March 21-29, 2015. To add to the excitement of the event, this year marks Brown's tenth year working with the organization on the annual celebration.

The opening reception is to be held on Saturday, March 21 from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. This year's theme is using printmaking as the medium. Students have been etching mandala designs onto old CDs to design their prints. For more information on this upcoming event, please see the flyer in the event announcement on the left side of this page for more information.

Help Support Our Students

Oakside Elementary teacher Ms. Nancy Castro has started a project via Donorschoose.org in order to help get students in her school a mobile bilingual library. If funded, Castro's project would put over 50 titles (including many familiar classics) in the hands of our children, allowing her students to read the same books as their peers, regardless of language barriers. To learn more about Ms. Castro's campaign, or to donate, please click here

At Hillcrest Elementary, students are participating in the St. Jude's Math-a-Thon in which they raise money for the children of St. Jude while completing math work on their grade level, provided by the cause. Students will be completing their math "assignments" March 9-13 and have already begun collecting their donations. The school has set a goal of raising $500.00 and are hoping to exceed that number. To visit Hillcrest's campaign page, or to make a donation, please click here.
