Peekskill Appoints Next Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education
At a Peekskill Board of Education meeting on January 20, Mr. Daniel Callahan was appointed by the Board to the position of Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education. Callahan will assume this role on July 1, 2015 when Dr. David Fine, the District's current Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education, takes over the District's superintendency.
"First I would just like to thank the Board for this opportunity," Callahan said. "Peekskill has a bold plan and I'm really excited to be a part of it. I think my coming here at this time is a perfect fit... It is not lost on me that this is a huge responsibility that [the Board] is handing me. I understand this as an educator and as a father of six, I understand this as a parent. Everybody loves their children and what you want for them is the best educational program that can be put together, and that will always be my goal. I honor the Board's faith and trust in me, and I will work every day to prove they were right in giving me this position."
Callahan joined the Peekskill City School District in 2014 as the District's Director of Teaching and Learning, a position in which his responsibilities included leading and directing the implementation of Peekskill's secondary focus on improving student performance, 21st Century Learning, professional development planning and technology integration initiatives for Grade 6 through Grade 12.
Prior to his time at Peekskill, Callahan served as the Assistant Principal at Hendrick Hudson High School for seven years. During his time with the Hendrick Hudson School District, Mr. Callahan spearheaded many District-wide initiatives in curriculum mapping, STEM education and energy conservation.
"It is definitely an honor to have Mr. Callahan on board, and to see what he has already done at Peekskill is just exciting," said Peekskill Board of Education President Douglas Glickert. "He works so well with our staff and leads by example. We look forward to [Mr. Callahan] continuing the good work that he is doing."

PHS Students Recognized by City for Participation in Civic Leadership Program

PCSD applauds Peekskill High School students Matthew Adams, Ricardo Archila and Jovan Tucker who recently took part in the City of Peekskill's Bipartisan Youth Mentor Program, which aims to develop civic leadership and critical thinking skills in students interested in learning about governance.
Students were assigned to work with City Councilmen Darren Rigger and Joey Torres in a partnership with the Peekskill City Police Department. The three PHS students put in many hours shadowing the councilmen and regularly attended Committee of the Whole and Common Council meetings. By attending the meetings students were able to become familiar with meeting etiquette and the use and development of agendas, as well as the process of law making and adopting resolutions.
Upon completing the program the students presented a final PowerPoint presentation to the Mayor and Common Council members using the information they had learned in the program. Adams, Archilia and Tucker were honored by the City of Peekskill with certificates that recognized their efforts and participation in the program.

PHS' "Iron Devils" Make Debut at FTC Robotics Competition

On January 25, six Peekskill High
School students participated for the first time in the FTC Robotics Competition held at Riverside High School in Yonkers, New York. After several weeks of preparation Peekskill's team, "The Iron Devils" had the opportunity to showcase their machine and compete against other local high school students.
As a rookie team, Peekskill's first objective was to pass two inspections- mechanical and electronic/software, in order to be admitted to the fields to compete. At the start of the competition, PHS students were present at the pit, where they underwent a harsh 30 minute judges' interview which was conducted by eight professional robotics engineers. After passing this preliminary interview successfully, The Iron Devils then passed both inspections and moved on to compete in five qualification rounds amongst 24 other teams from New York and Connecticut.
By the end of the day, The Iron Devils had not only earned their team the chance to compete, they also won two out of the five qualification rounds they participated in and placed thirteenth of twenty-four participants.
"It is a great success to be able to reach such a high ranking for a rookie team," said PHS robotics instructor Carlo Vidrini. "I am very proud of all involved."
