Wrestling Returns to Peekskill
On Tuesday, December 16 the Peekskill City School District's Athletic Department welcomed back the sport of wrestling to the District after a 20 year absence. The District's premiere event included eight of Peekskill's 12 new wrestlers who participated in the quad meet with students from three other schools: Mahopac, North Salem and John Jay Cross River.
In honor of the sport's resurrection, legendary PCSD Hall of Fame wrestling Coach Larry Cook returned to the District to attend the occasion. Cook coached wrestling at Peekskill from 1963, the year the sport first came to the District, until 1978. During his career Cook's wrestling teams became sectional champions twice, winning a title once in 1971-72 and again the following year in 1972-73.
Peekskill's newest wrestlers will be coached by Mike Telesco (Varsity Coach), Raoul Ortiz (Modified Coach), Nick Harris (JV Coach) and Jonathon Travis (Intramural Coach).
Also on hand at Tuesday's match was PCSD Athletic Director Lou Panzanaro, who says that he is looking forward to once again offering wrestling as an athletic option for Peekskill students.
"I'm hoping that we get enough wrestlers interested in joining so we can fill every weight class," said Panzanaro. "I love watching the sport. It's exciting, it's interesting. I think it's a great conditioner and I think it's something we need to round out our sports program here in Peekskill ."
Of those Peekskill students that wrestled at the meet, those who won their matches were Jahaad Franks, Juan Granda, Steven Hernandez and Samoray Sutton.

PKMS Dance Raises $1,000 for PCSD Families in Need

Last month the Peekskill Middle School Student Government sponsored a dance for the 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes. They donated the funds raised from the event to PCSD children in need to help bring them some holiday cheer. To help with the cost of the event, the PKMS PTO donated snacks while local DJ James McDonald graciously donated his time.
On December 22, Student Government Presidents Afua Yaboah and Mya Guardino presented PKMS Social Worker Nancy Ehrlich with $1,000 for our families. Thanks to everyone involved who helped make this event a success!

Students' 1st Business Venture a Success in PHS Entrepreneurship Class

At Peekskill High School Ms. Sharon Courtney's Entrepreneurship Economics class, which is sponsored by the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), recently went on a wholesale trip to New York City to learn about wholesale and retail selling as part of their course work. After returning from their trip, students then hosted an in-school sale where they aimed to turn a profit by selling the goods they purchased to the school community.
Before the trip, students conducted research about how to start a business and studied different selling strategies. The class also created small business plans and completed market research. Using their research findings, students purchased items in bulk, making sure to keep track of their spending via spreadsheets.
"The results of the sale were a success," Ms. Courtney said. "...As a teacher, it was a pleasure to watch them internalize the skills we learned in the classroom while running their own mini business."
In addition to teaching students important business skills, the class, which is comprised of mostly seniors, not only satisfies the high school's graduation requirement for economics, but also qualifies students for three optional credits from the SUNY system.
