PHS Drama Company Wows Audiences with "Breakfast Club" Performances

The reviews are in and the word is out- the Peekskill High School Drama Company's performances of John Hughes' "The Breakfast Club" were a huge hit! Students spent months preparing for their recent three-day run of the 80's classic, which was performed by a double cast over four shows in the Ford Administration Theater. Each cast prepared a unique interpretation of the play, which was directed by PCSD's new Theater Program teacher Terry Sandler. If you missed the show, or want to relive the experience again, tune into our District television network on cable channel 77 or on Verizon TV channel 32 at 8:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 8:20 p.m. (Air times subject to change).

Hillcrest Holds Can Sculpture Contest Following Food Drive

Students at Hillcrest Elementary collected almost 1,600 non-perishable food items during their Annual Food Dive which was recently held at the school. Following the collection, the School Leadership Club hosted a Can Sculpture Contest in which each homeroom class was asked to construct a design out of the items they had brought in.
While Ms. Sandomir's class collected the most items at 204 donations, the big winner of the sculpture contest was Ms. Kearse's class with their Hillcrest Hawks football stadium.
After the contest all of the donations were made into Thanksgiving baskets that were raffled off to Hillcrest families.
Congratulations Ms. Kearse's class!

PHS Students Interview Famous Nobel Laureate Leymah Gbowee

PHS girls from the Feminenza Young Women's Leadership Program recently went to New York City to meet and interview 2011 Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee, who is best known for leading a non-violent movement in 2003 that brought together Christian and Muslim women and put an end to the civil war that had been raging in Liberia for 14 years.
PHS students Adasa Bennet, Symphony Boyd-Roberts, Kayla Godbee, Gabby Yeagley, Nia Robinson, Jamilla Desir, and Brittney Pauta interviewed Gbowee asking questions that triggered many stories, words of wisdom, and counsels from the Peace Prize winner. Peekskill High School Principal Dr. Cassandra Hyacinthe and PCSD Board Member, Lisa Aspinall were also present and engaged in the interview process.
"Everyone present in the room was completely captured by Leymah's presence, straight-forward manner, strength, and charisma," McGowan said. "Her encouragement to the girls remained a strong thread throughout the evening."

PKMS' 2nd Annual Men's Night Breeds Bonding

Over 50 Peekskill Middle School students and the special men in their lives recently turned out for the school's second Annual Men's Night, which was put together by PKMS Health Teacher Andrew Kane and the help of other volunteers as well.
The evening was spent focusing on strengthening the male relationships in students' lives by inviting dads, grandpas, uncles, brothers, teachers and friends to participate in bonding activities such as arts and crafts, physical games, brain teasers and intimate discussions. Students and their adult counterparts rotated through a number of stations throughout the night before finally meeting in the cafeteria for refreshments.
"I'm really proud of the work we've done here and how supportive the community is of this night," said PKMS Principal Jamal Lewis. "We wanted tonight to positively impact young lives and I believe it did."
