New Community Schools Initiative Program Comes to Hillcrest Elementary

Back in June, the Peekskill City School District announced that Hillcrest Elementary School had been awarded a $500,000 grant from New York State for their Community Schools Initiative. The program, which has been funded for the next three years, has planned to address a wide range of support services for Peekskill's students and their families including health care, counseling, nutrition, and job preparation services. Now in its beginning stages, the new outreach program has begun to take shape as multiple representatives from agencies across Westchester settle into their new home at Hillcrest.

"I'm very excited about this," said Phyllis Elliott, the Project Director of the Hillcrest Community School Initiative (HCSI). "I see it as a chance to get the school to a really good place and help families and their children. I think every parent wants the best for their children, but they aren't always able to get it. Just having the medical, dental and mental health resources available at school is important."

"We want to help bring this community together by offering family support, advocacy and education so that the children can meet their academic goals," Elliott added.

  Woodside Elementary Celebrates Constitution Day

In celebration of Constitution Day on Wednesday, September 17, teachers and students at Woodside Elementary engaged in numerous constitution-related activities. The morning began as students and staff met by the school's flag pole where Woodside music teacher, Melissa Schuberg lead the first graders in stirring renditions of "God Bless America" and "This Land is Your Land." The day continued as students spent their time writing classroom constitutions, partaking in age-appropriate constitution read alouds, and creating patriotic arts and crafts.

New Theater Program Takes Center Stage at PCSD

For some, the art of acting comes naturally, while for others it is a skill to develop, but whether or not they were born to be on stage, Peekskill students at Hillcrest Elementary, Peekskill Middle School and Peekskill High School will now have the opportunity to develop their acting talents thanks to the District's newly implemented Theater Program.

In their theater classes students in grades 4 -12 will be learning various acting techniques and participating in activities that help to nurture self-expression while also building their confidence levels, public speaking abilities and teamwork skills. Additionally, higher level classes will have the chance to work on play-writing as well. Classes can look forward to field trips to professional theater productions, visits from acting troupes, and guest artists and lecturers.

"The student's eyes are going to brighten when they learn all of these aspects of the theater that they've never experienced before," said Peekskill's new theater teacher, Mr. Terry Sandler. "I'm so honored to be coming in to introduce the performing arts to Peekskill's students. It's an exciting addition to the school community."

PHS Students Remember 9/11 with Art Projects

Eleventh grade Peekskill High School students in Ms. Brown's Creative Crafts art class recently completed one of their first projects of the new school year and helped to memorialize the events of 9/11 in doing so. The mixed media collages, which were constructed as collaboration between students, were made from red, white and blue recycled fabrics and hung in the high school lobby alongside hand drawn pictures.

The inspiration for the projects came from the Stitches of Hope project which commemorated the events of 9/11 by piecing together a number of flags, including one that once hung at the Twin Towers. Brown noted that artist Costa Vece, who happens to have art work on display locally at the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Arts, was also a driving force behind the class project.

PKMS Joins Hundreds of Schools Nationwide to 'Stomp Out Bullying'

Recently PKMS students and staff joined hundreds of other schools across the nation in an effort to "STOMP Out Bullying" by wearing blue on October 6 for Blue Shirt Day, which is held in recognition of October being National Bullying Prevention Month.

STOMP Out Bullying is the leading national bullying and cyber bullying prevention organization for kids and teens. The organization's efforts were extended to the Peekskill Middle School with the help of 7th Grade Guidance Counselor Jacqueline Kilanowski and Assistant Principal Dr. June Ann Campolongo.

"Days like today really do raise awareness about bullying," said PKMS Principal Jamal Lewis. "It makes those who might have felt that they didn't have a voice before- that they do now, and they know that folks are here to support them. This is a huge opportunity for us as a school to come together to stop others from getting hurt and work toward helping one another heal."
