Governor Cuomo Announces $500k Grant for Peekskill School

On June 19, the Peekskill City School District excitedly welcomed Governor Cuomo to Hillcrest Elementary, where the Governor announced that the Peekskill school had been awarded a $500,000 grant from New York State. The funds, which are part of the NYS Community Schools initiative, will be used over three years to address a wide range of support services for Peekskill's students and their families including health care, counseling, nutrition, and job preparation services.

While in the building, the Governor visited two of Hillcrest's classrooms, Ms. Rodriguez and Ms. Bruno's classes, and spoke with fifth grader student Esteban Pauta about what makes New York great.

Oaksides' "Pennies for Parkinson's" Project Culminates with Walk

Oakside Elementary School recently held a walk to support Parkinson's research and raise awareness about the disease. By collecting "Pennies for Parkinson's" students, staff and administration raised $357 which was donated to the Fox Foundation.

The school assembled as "Team Clare" and donned tee shirts in honor of Principal Mary Foster's sister Clare Keenan Carey, who has Parkinson's. Keenan Cary was present at the event alongside her sister and father. The school-wide event consisted of each class walking around the city block where the school is located. Accompanied by their teachers, some students carried handmade signs, while others held banners sent to the school from the Fox Foundation. As they marched up and down the sidewalks behind Oakside, students smiled and flashed a thumbs-up to those passing by.

The day's event was organized by Oakside teacher Denise Chavarria along with the help of students from Oakside's school newspaper, Jupiter, for which Chavarria is also the advisor.

PHS Interact Club Holds "Senior" Prom at Drum Hill

Don't let their age fool you, the residents at Drum Hill Senior Living Community love a party just as much as any teenager does. Residents at the home recently had the chance to share their love of music and dancing with members of the Peekskill High School Interact Club, who hosted their Annual "Senior" Prom at Drum Hill.

At the event, Frank Sinatra songs played and Drum Hill residents shared stories and dance steps with Interact Club members.  As with any prom, a King and Queen were named and this year the coveted titles went to PHS student Davonte Woodton and Drum Hill resident Irmgard Schoene. Woodton and Schoene dethroned last year's reigning King and Queen, Interact member Aaron Cataquet and Drum Hill resident Sophie Failla, who, despite having to turn in their crowns, could be found dancing together once again at this year's prom.

Peekskill School District Honors Retirees and Tenured Staff at BOE Meeting

At a meeting on June 3, 2014, the Peekskill Board of Education honored those who will be retiring from the District this year. Also honored at the meeting were District staff members who recently received tenure.

At the celebration, honorees were presented certificates of recognition, as well as a small gift which was accompanied by a card that contained an inspirational poem. The poem was read aloud to those in attendance by District Superintendent Dr. Larry Licipoli, who thanked those who have dedicated their professional careers to Peekskill. Licopoli also recognized tenure candidates, who he noted, will hopefully "continue a career here in Peekskill."

PKMS Students Honored at Eighth Grade Awards Ceremony

Congratulations to all of the Peekskill Middle School eighth graders who were honored at the PKMS Grade 8 Awards Ceremony last month! Certificates of recognition were presented to students for exhibiting academic excellence in an array of subjects. Awards were also presented to those who had most improved in a specific area of study. The evening's Principal's Award, similar to the Valedictorian and Salutatorian honor which is bestowed upon graduating high school students, was presented to Nicole Furtado and Kiara Adams.

Peekskill High School Graduates 180 Students

The Paramount Theater in Peekskill was packed to capacity as family and friends came out to watch as Peekskill High School's 180 graduating seniors received their diplomas at the school's annual commencement ceremony which took place on Sunday, June 29.

At the event, attendees had the opportunity to hear from the Class of 2014's Senior Class President and Mistress of Ceremonies Afua Yeboah, Student Council President Jacobi Clarke, Salutatorian Paige Hill and Valedictorian Andy Martinez.

During the ceremony, the Class of 2014 were surprised by Peekskill's Class of 2021 who, under the guidance of District music teacher Crystal Hernandez, performed a special rendition of Frank Sinatra's "High Hopes"  for the graduates. Hernandez had the children sing a personalized version, with the words rewritten to praise the Class of 2014.

Three PCSD School Board Members Honored by NYSSBA

Congratulations to Peekskill School Board members Lisa Aspinall-Kellawon, Joseph Urbanowicz, and Douglas Glickert who were honored by the New York State School Boards Association's School Board U Recognition Program at Peekskill's Board of Education Meeting on June 17. The three Board members received NYSSBA's Board Achievement Award which recognized the "extensive time and effort" each member has dedicated to the Peekskill BOE. The award also honored each recipient for "continually expanding their governance knowledge and skills" by participating in a variety of NYSSBA programs.

Peekskill Middle School Holds 2nd Annual Triathlon

Peekskill Middle School recently held its second Triathlon for both students and staff. Students from every grade swam, biked and ran, each child hoping to get the three tasks completed in a shorter amount of time than their peers.

The triathlon was organized by PKMS Physical Education Teacher Jonathan Iasillo, who says his own interest in triathlons is what inspired him to bring the competition to the middle school.

The competition boasted 12 student participants, which is double the amount that joined the event last year, and PKMS Principal Dr. David Fine represented the school as the sole staff participant this year. Eighth grader Justin Hahn took first place overall by completing the course in a record breaking 14 minutes.
