PKMS' Nikia Carter Places 2nd in Statewide Chemistry Competition

Congratulations to Peekskill Middle School student Nikia Carter who came in second place out of 600 competitors from across New York State that participated in the "You Be The Chemist" Challenge on April 26 in Tarrytown, NY. Carter's fellow PKMS teammate Stanley Landivar also made it to the final round of the contest. Great job to all of our students who entered the competition and go Nikia!

Oak Sapling Finds New Home at Peekskill High School

The Peekskill City School District recently celebrated their first of what many hope will be a new tradition at Peekskill High School. In honor of Arbor Day, the District held a tree planting on the parade field at PHS, and a swamp white oak sapling was given a new home to flourish and grow.

The school's first Arbor Day celebration was organized by the high school's 4H/Gardening Club, school and district administrators, members of Peekskill's Parks and Recreation Board and community members. The tree planting is the first step in the District's plan to beautify the parade field. At the ceremony students read poems and facts about trees and sang songs as well. Councilman Joe Torres was also on hand to present the club with a Proclamation from the city of Peekskill.

HVSF Actors Modernize Shakespeare for PHS Freshman

For over five years now, ninth grade English students at Peekskill High School have had the privilege of participating in the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival's Five Week Residency program as part of their freshman year curriculum. The program comes to the school thanks to a grant from the Frog Rock Foundation and pairs students with teaching artists from the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, which is based out of Garrison, New York.

This year, at the end of the five week workshop, the HVSF troupe gave a culminating performance of Much Ado About Nothing - Shakespeare's beloved comedy. To make the play more relatable to a young generation, the actors gave it a modern twist by taking the story into the digital age and incorporating the use of present day technology, such as cell phones and social networks.

PKMS Environmental Club Presents at Wheelabrator Symposium

The Peekskill Middle School Environmental Club recently traveled to Sunrise, Florida to present their 2014 research project titled, "The Hudson River: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow," along with 15 other middle schools from across the Eastern Seaboard at Wheelabrator Technologies' Environmental Symposium. For the first time ever, our student's presentation was streamed live so viewers could watch from home. We are very proud of our students who did an excellent job representing Peekskill schools at the symposium!

Peekskill City School District Appoints Three New Principals

At a Board of Education meeting on May 6, the Peekskill City School District announced the appointment of three new administrators at the District. The new hires come to Peekskill as part of the District's Reorganization Plan, which was announced in late February. Mr. Rolando Briceņo, Mr. Jamal Lewis and Dr. Cassandra Hyacinthe will be filling the positions of Woodside/Uriah Hill Principal, Peekskill Middle School Principal, and Peekskill High School Principal effective as of July 1, 2014.

"We were looking for people who had the right fit for the needs of our District and we believe we have found them," said Peekskill Superintendent Dr. Larry Licopoli at Tuesday night's meeting. "In our new reorganization design we've assured that no one is left alone, and we are all here to support each other and work together as an administrative team. I want to congratulate all of our new hires and obviously, the best is yet to come."
