Peekskill Schools Well Represented in City's St. Patrick's Day Parade

Peekskill Schools were enthusiastically represented in the Peekskill St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 15. Leading the contingent were Board of Ed members Douglas Glickert, Colin Smith, and Maria Pereira, along with Assistant Superintendent Joseph Mosey. Principal Mary Foster marched with Oakside, Principal Staci Woodley waved along with Woodside, and Principal Jackie Liburd joined her enthusiastic Hillcrest contingent. The PHS Marching Band played with style and rhythm and even did a dance routine in front of the reviewing stand.

PHS Foreign Language Department Receives Proclamation from Governor Cuomo

Last month Peekskill High School's Foreign Language Department held their 9th Annual National Foreign Language Week from March 4 -7. As part of the celebration the department showed foreign films, held dance workshops and hosted a food festival. As a result of their efforts, the department recently received a Proclamation from Governor Cuomo which recognized PHS for its observance of Foreign Language Week and for highlighting "the benefits of programs that encourage American youth to broaden their horizons and scope of knowledge by learning a second language."

Oakside Elementary Holds 9th Annual Cup Stacking Competition

For the ninth year in a row, students at Oakside Elementary came together to compete in a cup stacking competition to help raise money for Cystic Fibrosis research

Students spent the past few weeks practicing their cup stacking skills to compete in the event, which was organized with the help of Coach Murphy, Oakside's PE teacher. Those with the fastest times received medals and other prizes such as stuffed animals and tee shirts.

Hillcrest Teachers Bring Colonial Job Fair to Woodside Students

Hillcrest Elementary School teachers recently thought of a fun way to bring one of the Common Core domains to life. As students were learning about colonial life and the jobs people once held, teachers decided to host a "Colonial Job Fair" to further discuss the topic with the children.

Teachers dressed up in old time clothing, prepared posters and brought in tools and props to highlight trades such as tanners, cobblers, blacksmiths, general store owners, brick makers and more.

After the day was a success at Hillcrest, teachers visited Woodside Elementary School to share the fair with kindergarten students as well, since they too are learning about colonial times.

Peekskill High School's Student Council members were recently joined by fellow classmates as they gave input to Superintendent Dr. Licopoli and future Superintendent Dr. Fine regarding what they would like to see in the next Peekskill High School Principal.

Some of the many qualities the students would like the candidate to have include: a stern, yet fair demeanor, someone who is friendly and gets to know students on a personal level, and someone who shares students' school spirit. Students also expressed the need for this individual to be well organized, passionate about the position and committed to the job "for the long haul."

Dr. Licopoli responded to the students' suggestions by noting that all of the qualities desired by the students, "articulated the characteristic of an exemplary leader."

To follow up this symposium, students were invited to participate in principal candidate interviews on April 7 and a student panel had the opportunity to ask potential principals questions.

Oakside PBIS Celebration Honors Women's History Month

Last month, second grade Dual Language students at Oakside Elementary added an adorable touch to the school's monthly PBIS celebration when they performed Shirley Temple's, "Good Ship Lollipop." In honor of March being Women's History Month the children learned about Temple's career and watched clips of her performances.
