As former Peekskill players, Tre Johnson III and Billy Thomas were honored on Football Alumni Day, over 100 alumni from the class of 1973 showered the players in handfuls of confetti.

PKMS Students Play in Northern Westchester Middle School Honors Band Program Performance

Six Peekskill Middle School students spent several Saturday mornings rehearsing to be part of the Northern Westchester Middle School Honors Band performance that took place last month at North Salem High School. The group of PKMS students joined other middle school musicians from the area to participate in the Honors Band program, which is sponsored and run by Dr. Bradley Ethington of Syracuse University.

Athletic Jersey Retirement Ceremony Held on Football Alumni Day

On October 12, the Peekskill City School District's Athletic Department hosted Football Alumni Day and held a special ceremony to retire the jerseys of former Peekskill players, Tre Johnson III and Billy Thomas (pictured above), both of whom went on to play for the NFL after their time at Peekskill. Johnson and Thomas are the second and third Peekskill High School football players to have their jerseys retired.

The ceremony included a surprise visit from Johnson's family, as well as over 100 alumni from the class of 1973. As the day's honorees were presented with their retired jerseys at midfield, all of the alumni in attendance made their way onto the field to become part of the celebration, each carrying placards signifying the elementary school they had attended in Peekskill.

"It's always great to come back to Peekskill," said Thomas. "...To become the second and third players from Peekskill High School football to have our jerseys retired is humbling, and I can't tell you how proud I am to represent Peekskill in my travels. It all started right here."

Peekskill Firefighters Make Fire Safety Fun at Elementary Schools

During the month of October, the Peekskill Fire Department teamed up with the Peekskill City School District to help promote Fire Safety and Prevention Month to young students. Peekskill Firefighters visited Woodside and Oakside Elementary Schools to teach children about what they can do in the event of a fire and spoke with the children about fire safety facts. Students had the opportunity to examine the protective clothes worn by firefighters and were shown the equipment firefighters use to help protect people and put out fires. The children were especially excited to have the chance to see a real fire truck up close.

In recognition of the month's theme, students from Woodside and Oakside also submitted posters for the Peekskill Firefighters Association's 2013 Fire Prevention Poster contest. The first place winner of the Pete Volkman Award was third-grader, Mya Esmeralda Melendez of Ms. Delmonico's class at Oakside Elementary. See below for a complete list of winners.

PNW BOCES Honors PCSD with Plaque for Hosting Summer Program

At the October 15 Board of Education meeting, the Peekskill City School District was presented with a plaque from Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES' Assistant Superintendent, Lynn Allen and Special Education Director, Adam Van Der Stuyf. The plaque was presented to the Board of Education "with sincere gratitude and appreciation" for housing BOCES' Special Education Summer School Program at Peekskill Middle School over the summer while the program's BOCES building underwent construction.

"Our children found a place where they could have their summer school program, but they also found an extended family," Allen said. "They found a home that we will forever be grateful to the Peekskill City School District for providing us. It wasn't just the beautiful building we fell in love with, but the wonderful people that were there. We thank all of the people who were involved in making this happen."

"Don't Be a Monster" Anti-Bullying Campaign Visits Peekskill Middle School

In recognition of October being National Bullying Prevention Month, last month Peekskill Middle School welcomed the "Don't Be a Monster" anti-bullying campaign to their building. The program is part of a nation-wide campaign that aims to promote a safe learning environment while teaching students about the serious dangers of bullying. The program's message was embraced by those in attendance and the event concluded with a powerful moment as one student opted to come to the stage to share their own experience with being bullied. The individual was met with applause and a standing ovation from their peers.

"The video and presentation related to bullying made a profound impact on our students and staff," said Peekskill Middle School Principal, Dr. David Fine.  "The motto, "don't be a monster" is another tool for us to remind, support, and discuss within our teaching and learning environment..."
