Peekskill's New Accomplished Administrators
At their June 18th meeting, The Peekskill City School District's Board of Education appointed Dr. Lorenzo Licopoli to serve as the District's Interim Superintendent of Schools and Jacqueline Liburd to serve as the new Principal for Hillcrest Elementary School.
Dr. Licopoli will be replacing Jim Willis as Superintendent, and will re-join Peekskill as Interim Superintendent for a one year term beginning July 13, 2013. Licopoli served the Peekskill City School District previously from January 3, 2011 - July 2011, and has been the Interim Superintendent at Arlington Central School District for the past two years.
"It is really a joy for me to be returning to the Peekskill School District," Licopoli said. "I'm looking forward to coming back in what has been a tough time for this district, and turning a new page for Peekskill in collaboration with the Board of Education, administration, faculty, staff and parents and students."
Ms. Liburd has replaced Michelle Zernone as Hillcrest's Principal as of July 1, 2013. Liburd has been with the district almost five years and has simultaneously served as the Assistant Principal for Woodside, Oakside and Hillcrest Elementary Schools. Prior to her career in Peekskill, Ms. Liburd worked in the Mount Vernon and Yonkers school districts for over 15 years.
"I'm super excited about starting at Hillcrest as building leader and continuing the work Ms. Zernone started," Liburd said. "I'm looking forward to building and nurturing an environment that fosters positive communications, critical thinking and positive behaviors in our children and continuing to build the strong relationships I have with parents and students."

Retired Peekskill Faculty Association Members Award Scholarships
At their annual luncheon last month, the Retired Educators of the Peekskill Faculty Association helped make college dreams a reality for two Peekskill High school students. Seniors Karen Archila and Carlos Cirollo were each awarded $2500 in college scholarship funds.
The two scholarship recipients submitted winning essays on the subject of why they wanted to pursue a career in education. Ms. Archila and Mr. Cirolla, accompanied by their proud families, read their essays to the retired teachers gathered at the harbor house at Crystal Bay in Peekskill.
The Retired PFA Scholarship Committee is chaired by Bill Acosta and includes Linda Conte, Debbie Engle, Margie Harde, Bob Hudson, Meta Parker and Stu Sabshin. Participant leaders in arranging and conducting the luncheon included: Bob Hudson, Thom Piliouras, Bill Acosta, Carolyn Bambace, and Janet Robinson. Assistant PHS Principal Margie Daniels and Guidance Coordinator Maria Gordineer also participated in planning the luncheon.
