D.A.R.E. & G.R.E.A.T. Programs Build Bonds and Strengthen Community
Officer Leo Dylewski has been a police officer for the past 13 years, 12 of which he has spent working with the City of Peekskill Police Department. For the last 9 years he has been teaching Drug Abuse Resistance Education (better known as D.A.R.E.) to fifth graders in the Peekskill City School District and in 2008, began teaching Gang Resistance Education and Training (or G.R.E.A.T.) to the district's sixth graders as well. Together, with the help of officers like Dylewski, the Peekskill City School District and the City of Peekskill Police Department have formed a collaborative effort to help keep the youth of our community focused on a positive future and this June will be graduating over 200 students from these programs. To read a full article about the many ways these programs have benefited our students and community, click here.

Congratulations to our Students in the News!
Congratulations to PHS students, Mikyla Abdul-Azim (pictured left) and Khalilah Cunningham (pictured right) who both made headlines in the month of January! Abdul-Azim, a senior at PHS, received the Peace and Non-Violence Award on January 12, at the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Legacy Awards. The event, which is
hosted by the African American Men of Westchester, Inc. and United Way of Westchester - Putnam in conjunction with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Youth Awards Committee, honored Abdul-Azim for her work helping to organize events which reinforce effective communication and community problem solving.
Cunningham was one of the nine students that were recognized as Students of Distinction by the Tech Center at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES. The students were nominated by their teachers for their outstanding work, excellent attitudes, and dedication.

PHS Holds Basketball Alumni Night & Gary "Porky" Male Dedication
On January 11th the Peekskill City School District's Athletic Department welcomed back former basketball players for the department's annual Alumni Night. The evening was highlighted by both Junior Varsity and Varsity Boys Basketball games and included a very special dedication ceremony in the name of PCSD's former Team & Equipment Manager, Gary "Porky" Male. Male, who passed away last year, served the district's Athletic Department for 25 years. The equipment closet in the High School gym, where Porky did much of his work, will now be known as "Porky's Pen." In addition to Porky's closet dedication, there will also be an empty seat in the gym with his jacket on it at all home games this year. To read more about this event, click here. For more photos from the evening, click here.
