Peekskill City School District: Educating Children of Promise
We welcome you to 2013 and hope that everyone had a lovely holiday and a great New Year! Things were busy around PCSD this past month as students, staff and administration prepared for the holidays in various ways. Besides all of the holiday performances there were to enjoy, many throughout the District took part in charity work to help spread cheer to others during the season. Emily Diaz's 5th Grade Class Writes Letters & Receives One From President Obama
diazs class
At Hillcrest Elementary, students in Emily Diaz's 5th grade class spent a portion of their December class time writing letters in both English and Spanish to 114 soldiers deployed all over the Middle East who were unable to return home to be with their families for the holidays. In their letters, the students thanked the soldiers for their sacrifices and for helping to protect our country's freedoms. This most recent letter writing project is one of many that Diaz has had her class take part in. Earlier this year Diaz's students wrote to both Senator Ball and President Obama, both of whom have responded to the class. In the letter from President Obama, which was received just last week, the President thanked the students for their "thoughtful letters," and encouraged the children set educational goals and to work hard to improve their community and our Nation. The president concluded his letter by writing, "Young people like you inspire me and give me great hope for the future."
Oakside Elementary Students Sing to Local Seniors at the Field Library

Just before the holiday break students from Oakside Elementary took their annual Winter Sing-a-Long show on the road when they stopped by Peekskill's Field Library to sing holiday songs to a group of senior citizens who gather frequently at the library. The children's chorus, which was led by their music teacher, Andrea Moffett, serenated their audience while the seniors enjoyed their lunch. Students from Oakside also joined students from Hillcrest in visiting the Veterans Home at Montrose the week before Christmas. At each visit the children sang Christmas songs and handed out handmade holiday cards and candy canes to the Home's residents.
Young Stars Shine at Hillcrest's Talent Show
hillcrest talent show
Students at Hillcrest Elementary sang, danced and even cartwheeled their way across the stage at the school's second annual Talent Show. While all of the acts were equally great, the show concluded with an especially energetic group of students who chose to show off their "Gangam Style," which led to the audience, and even some teachers, joining them in the dance.
