Midweek Advent at Abiding Presence - "Characters, Carols & Communion"

Wednesdays in December from 7:15 pm - 8:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall

Join us for "Characters, Carols & Communion," an inter-generational midweek Advent study and worship experience based on the characters in the nativity. Each week we will meet around round tables in the fellowship hall to light Advent wreaths, read and discuss scripture, sing beloved Christmas carols and share in Communion. There will be something for all ages. If you have never been to Wednesday Night Gathering, now is a great time to give it a try. Our three children's choirs will all rehearse together from 6:45 pm - 7:15 pm. Dinner will be served from 6:15 pm - 7:15 pm.

Monday, December 24

3:30 PM-Contemporary Family Service with Holy Communion

5:30 PM - Traditional Family Service with Holy Communion

 Monday, December 24

7:30 PM - Candlelight Service with Holy Communion

10:00 PM - Candlelight Service with Holy Communion

Both family services will include a Christmas drama with puppets and clergy.  Both candlelight services will include a sermon by Pastor Keseley.  A staffed nursery will be available at the first three services.

With four services this year there will be room for everyone!  Be sure to invite your friends, neighbors and co-workers to worship.  Postcards with the worship times are available in the narthex to share with anyone who might be looking for a place to worship this Christmas.

Thank You!

A big thank you to everyone who made last week's Christmas Concert & Cookie Fellowship a huge success. Our congregation is blessed with incredible musicians of all ages.  Thank you to all of our musicians who shared their musical gifts, to Mandy Hull and Lori Rossett for everything they did to make the concert possible, and to Kathi and Mike Schultz and Melody Light for putting together the cookie fellowship.

Ministries

Poinsettias, Greenery, and Liturgical Furnishings  to Decorate Our Church Building

There are 3 ways to give this Christmas to honor a loved one:

1) Poinsettias to decorate the Sanctuary-The cost of each poinsettia plant is $10.00. (The deadline to order is December 16.)

2) Contributions for Outdoor Wreaths & Greenery-You may donate any amount towards the cost of wreaths and garlands.

3) Contributions toward liturgical furnishings for our new Sanctuary

Please fill out your Count-Me-In form for poinsettia, wreath and/or furnishing donations, and indicate if they are "in Honor of" or "in Memory of" a specific person, or if the donation is "to the Glory of God".  Please also indicate the item you are donating on the memo line of your check.

25:40 Gift Items

25:40 offers Christmas cards, custom jewelry and a few other items for purchase with 100% of the proceeds going to 25:40.  These items make great Christmas gifts.

Love Without Boundaries Gifts

Love Without Boundaries presents another way to give an alternate gift this Christmas season.  Gift cards are available for donations-the suggested minimum donation is $10.00.  The inside of the card includes the following verse:

May the peace and joy of the holiday season be with you throughout the coming year. In your honor, a gift was made to bring hope and healing to an orphaned child.

Proceeds will benefit children in need in Love Without Boundaries' programs.  In addition, our youth will have a table selling the sodalets (bracelets) to give the gift of education to older children in China.  (Please see the update on the following page.)

Gifts of Hope

When you begin to think about Christmas shopping, why not consider alternative giving?  Rather than buying a present, buy a symbol.  Give Gifts of Hope.  The catalog will be available next week, or you may check the web site, www.giftsofhopemetrodc.org, which has been updated and has a Donate Now button, so a donation can be made at any time to the organization.  The donation is via Network for Good (which ULA had used before the merger with Gifts of Hope).   This year-round donation process will give all our supporters one more way to make a contribution to Gifts of Hope and our many beneficiary organizations.  When making a donation via website:  During the process the donor is asked for a designated project.  The "Designation (Optional)" line is where the donor adds "Gifts of Hope" (or one of our beneficiary organizations).  Then when Network for Good distributes the money to the Synod Treasurer, it is clear that the money is designated for Gifts of Hope.  The donor may also send an e-card to the person honored with the gift--and with a personalized message.  While many of the card choices pertain to the Christmas holiday, there are several choices which are general use cards.  The donor will receive an email from Network for Good, stating that the contribution is tax-deductible.

Staff Gifts

During this holiday season, we have much to be thankful for as we look forward to celebrating our Lord's birth.  I ask you to take a few moments to reflect on this past year-the worship services, events and activities that shaped Abiding Presence in 2012.  A great deal of hard work is done daily to make Abiding Presence a sanctuary in our busy lives. This past year has been one filled with change, and we have once again asked a lot of our pastor and staff.  They continually exceed our expectations in fulfilling the ministries of our church.  Please take a moment during this busy season to say "thank you" to each member of our wonderful staff.  And if it is within your heart and means, please consider giving a monetary gift to the staff of Abiding Presence as an additional way of saying thanks for all that they do. You can place your gift in the weekly offering or drop it off in the church office.  Please identify it as "Staff Gift".

Thank you for your continued support of our church staff and council. May you all have a blessed and Merry Christmas.

President of the Congregation

Stewardship 2013 - Serve Boldly

Thanks very much to so many of you who have already submitted your Time and Talent forms and your Pledge cards.   Your submissions are helping to build our 2013 programs both within Abiding Presence and beyond our doors through our combined efforts to Serve Boldly.

If you have not yet submitted your forms, it is not too late, and we still need you.  We each have our own unique gifts from God, and our work in serving God will not be complete without you and your gifts.  If you no longer have your Stewardship packet, extra forms are available at church. Thank you again for your generosity!

Wednesday Night Dinner Help Needed on January 16

We need assistance with cooking our Wednesday Gathering dinner on Wednesday, January 16, as two of our dinner cooks will be gone that evening.  If you can help, please contact Kathi Schultz in the church office.  She will be happy to discuss what will need to be done, and help plan a menu based on what you feel comfortable cooking.  We will need a minimum of two people to assist with dinner that evening.

Receipts for 2012

If you have purchased items for the church in 2012 and wish to be reimbursed for the purchase, please turn in your receipts for the items to the church office no later than Friday, December 21.

Altar Flower Chart for 2013

The altar flower chart for 2013 is up on the wall outside the church office.  Please sign up to provide flowers for our worship services next year.  It is not necessary to use a florist; your own flowers or a purchased bouquet in a vase are welcome additions.

2013 Contribution Envelopes

Contribution envelopes for 2013 are available in the narthex for those members of the congregation who write checks for their contributions.  White General Fund contribution envelopes and blue Capital Campaign envelopes are packaged together, along with a few special service envelopes.  Even if you give electronically, a few special service envelopes are available for you, as well.

Each year we try to abide by your wishes of how many envelopes you would like-whether one per month, one per week, or none at all if you give electronically.  Please pick up your packet so that we can save the cost of mailing them to you.  If you need envelopes and do not see a packet with your name on it, please notify the church office.  Thank you!

Adult Bible Study on Sunday Mornings

Adults interested in Bible Study will gather at 10 AM in the library with Mike Magnell for a study on Philippians.

Thursday Morning Bible Study-"Hallelujuah, the Bible and Handel's Messiah"

This study will last through the Advent season, and possibly through Easter.  Our Bibles will be our main text as we learn the source of Handel's music.  We will use a resource guide ($19.95) to supplement and guide our study.  If you are interested in joining this study, please contact Kathryn Ives.  (If you can't commit to the whole study but would like to join us for a part of it, let Kathryn know that, as well.)

3-B's Friday Bible Study-Next Meeting is Jan. 11th

3B's is a women's fellowship group that meets in each other's homes for a light Breakfast, Bible study and a time to share our Blessings from God.  Our next meeting will be on Friday, January 11th, at Kathy Schmiesing's home.  The Bible study we use comes from the ELCA's women magazine, "Gather."   This year's study is  "Gathered by God"- a look at all the ways God calls us to gather.  We would love to have you join us.  For more information, please contact Kathy Schmiesing.

2013 Senior High Youth Mission Trip

We're planning ahead and have already set the dates for our 2013 Sr. High mission trip. We'll be headed to rural Bluefield, WV, for a week of home repair, July 7-13, 2013. The cost will be $550 per person for the week, which will include all meals except for dinner one night.   Registration forms available on the Sr. High Youth bulletin board.

Senior High Youth Zone: Check it out and Sign-up!

Senior High Youth...Listen Up!  Some of you have attended the Youth Quake in the past, but if not, here is your chance.  You have now reached the age that you can attend the Youth Zone.  This is a great event held in Virginia Beach March 1-3, 2013, aimed at senior high youth.  The theme this year is "Thrive", based on Jeremiah 29:11: "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"  If you have enjoyed a Youth Quake in the past, loved the National Youth Gathering, or wished you had gone to one in the past, and are looking for a fun way to deepen your faith, this just may be the answer.  You will have the chance to experience great bands, singers, speakers, workshops with topics that relate to your life, devotions, a talent show, games, and much more.  It is held right on the beach and is a great way to enrich your relationships with each other and enjoy the same kind of fun we have had so far this year.  The registration forms are on the Senior High Youth bulletin board.  Pick one up and fill it out!  Please feel free to contact Pastor Keseley or Vicar Welke with any questions.

Noisy Offering for December (Dec. 15th and 16th)

Noisy Offering for the month of December will be designated to ELCA Disaster Relief - Sandy.  In the aftermath of Sandy there has been at least 16 ELCA congregations damaged along the East Coast as well as numerous families left without or with damaged homes.  As the days, weeks, months, and years continue ELCA Disaster Relief will be in those areas impacted by the storm providing help and support to those in need.  Remember your change the weekend of December 15th and 16th so we can make some noise during worship.

A Message from Bishop Hanson

We, as the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, stand with all those who were impacted by Hurricane Sandy-and we will stay until the work is done.  Thanks to the generosity of people like you, we have already responded and provided hope in the Caribbean and in areas of the United States with food, water, and shelter.  But your support is still needed.  Your gift, designated for "Hurricane Sandy,' will be used entirely-100 percent-to provide relief to areas most impacted.  Your donation now will help address basic needs of families and individuals; build and reconstruct homes, communities and congregations; coordinate volunteer efforts from people across the country and support case managers working directly with those who have lost everything.  During this season of Advent, may your continued support be a light for all those rebuilding their lives in Hurricane Sandy's wake.  Thank you!

(For those wishing to donate, ELCA Disaster Response donation forms  can be found on the credenza near the

nursery and checks may be placed in the offering plate.)

Lutheran World Relief Quilt Campaign Update-13 for 2013

Tied in faith. Sent in hope. Wrapped in love!

13 for 2013 is on its way.  We had our first meeting and discovered that we have the makings of several quilts.  Some of us took fabric home to start making the quilt tops.  Others took fabric home to start cutting squares.  In addition, at their fall lock-in, the confirmation kids cut squares to be put together in a quilt which they will tie at their spring lock-in.

On Friday, January 25, we will have our first meeting in 2013.  We also hope to have a meeting on Saturday the 26th for folks who can't make a weekday meeting.  At these meetings we will be starting to assemble quilts and also hope to have a few quilt tops ready for tying.

Between now and then, we will welcome any left over fabric you would like to donate.  Just bring it to the church office or give it to Lynne Imre or Kathryn Ives.

If you want to start a quilt on your own, please remember that Lutheran World Relief mission quilts are simple.  Tops and bottoms can be made of whole pieces of fabric or any type of patchwork of smaller squares.  They must be 60" by 80" and made of washable fabrics with no holes or stains.   They should be tied with crochet or similar cord or machine quilted.  (Fabrics may not contain religious, patriotic or military symbols.  No camouflage pattern.)  If you just want to make a 60" by 80" top and bring it to us, we will be sure it receives batting and a back and is tied.

Don't forget, if you can't participate in making a quilt, you can still get involved by donating to help purchase batting and backing for the quilts.  Money is also needed to pay for shipping the quilts to the places where they are needed.

Lynne Imre and Kathryn Ives are contact people for your questions about the project.

Children's Weekend Meal Program

Please see the list below for items needed by January 9.  There are pictures of the items on the bulletin board in the narthex if you are uncertain of what is requested.  Donations my be left in the bin in the narthex.  Thank you so much for your generosity. Please contact Sharon Downs at sharon@abidingpresence.net or Clare Maaseide at clare@northernlight.com, f you have any questions.
