First South African Students
Join MMY
|
Tevet 5772 was a milestone month here at MMY, as we welcomed our first South African student, Shira Amar from Johannesburg! Coming from the Southern Hemisphere, Shira joined us in January, enjoyed a semester with the 5772 talmidot, and has now continued for the second half of her year with the girls who came for 5773.
At the beginning of this year in Elul, Shira was joined by two other South Africans, Esti Hoppenstein and Sarit Saffer. In addition, Rabbi Haber visited Joburg this past summer, and as a result, two more students are set to join MMY in January. We are proud to be one of the few Midrashot in Israel that cater to students from South Africa. They join our existing groups from the US, Canada, England, Australia and Israel - making MMY into a truly "international" seminary!

Alumnae Profiles / Testimonials
Miriam Borenstein (MMY 5766-5767)
|
Miriam Borenstein lives in West Hempstead, NY and is a teacher at the Samuel H Wang Yeshiva University High School for Girls, colloquially known as "Central".
As Herb Brooks said, "great moments are born from great opportunities", but great opportunities are born from patience and hard work. Following your dreams and being successful is no simple task, but if you work hard enough and push yourself, you can live your dreams.
Baruch Hashem I've been able to work towards one of my dreams, teaching! I've always loved the classroom (I may have expressed that love through class clowning in my early years - but it was there in the classroom that I felt I can truly be myself, though my teachers might perhaps have said I was a bit too much of myself!).
Being a curious kid, I loved questioning and learning about anything and everything. I loved being engaged in a discussion, where I was challenged to think and learn something new. Being in class was exciting, and I loved the classroom dynamic. With that said, I must admit that I was not a good student. Applying myself and working hard were not part of my work-ethic. My skills were weak and I struggled in school, despite my love for learning. Things did not come as easy to me as they did for my friends or classmates. However, my love of learning still grew despite my struggles.
It was at a young age that I began to dream of becoming a Morah.

"Shiur Bashetach" - Learning
on Location
|
Tiyulim in MMY are fun and enjoyable - but they are also part of the learning. Wherever we travel around the country to hike its beautiful mountains and valleys, we always carry a Tanach with us so that we can benefit from the unique opportunity to study Tanach where it actually occurred.
In addition to that, this year we started a new program taking advantage of MMY's location in an extremely important and historic location - just outside of the Old City, in the valley known as "Emek Refaim" where King David faught an important battle against the Plishtim, and situated directly on the ancient mountain road that led towards Jerusalem from the South.
The program will consist of three learning days throughout the year, each of which begins in the Bet Midrash and continues in the streets right outside our home. We had the first of these days on Isru Chag Sukkot. We started in the Bet Midrash with a shiur by Rabbi Haber, and then we walked out of MMY, down Derech Chevron and over to Ir David, where we walked through the ancient ruins to better understand what we had just learned.
A second day is scheduled in November, on the "Tayelet" right across the street from MMY, and a third one in March, when we will again return to the Old City.

New Aliya Video has links to MMY |
Mr. Izzy Broker, a recent Oleh and a resident of Alon Shvut, has just produced a new video about Aliya, in honor of Parshat Lech Lecha.
The video is actually connected to MMY in two ways. First of all, Mr. Broker is the father-in-law of Sally (Abraham) Broker, MMY 5764-5765 and a current Rakezet.
And furthermore, the video also features an interview with Rabbi Haber (starting at 15:55).
