Easter Sunday

O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

"I am about to create new heavens and a new earth" Isaiah 65:17 "as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ." 1 Cor 15:22
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

The Bible begins with the account of creation: "In the beginning, God created ...."  And at the end of the sixth day "God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good" and on the seventh day he rested.

This good creation fell under the influence of evil and sin through the sin of Adam and Eve.  God's remedy, his rescue plan, involved his entry into his own creation.  The One who lives outside of time entered our time, confined himself to a body like ours, to pain and suffering like ours.  God the Son became man, took our sins upon himself, and died on a cross on Good Friday, the sixth day.  On the seventh day, the Sabbath, he remained in the tomb.

The next day, the first day of the week, became the eighth day of God's creation.  For on this day, the Day of the Resurrection - new creation!  New Adam!  The Kingdom of God has invaded the Kingdom of Evil and "led captivity captive."

We live in the eighth day season!  The empty tomb means that resurrection is a reality - now for the first fruits only, Jesus.  But when the lamb who was slain returns, when the end comes, "when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father" then the last enemy to be destroyed is death, and we each will receive a resurrected body.

The grave no longer holds the power to intimidate us who are new creation in Christ for he has overcome death for us.  When he returns death will be destroyed forever, but in the interim we are assured that new creation has already begun - the "new heavens and new earth" have begun their transformation, and we have been commissioned to carry on this work through the power of him who lives in us.  Alleluia!  Christ is Risen!  The Lord is Risen indeed! Alleluia!

Christ is Risen, and you, o death, are annihilated!
Christ is Risen, and the evil ones are cast down!
Christ is Risen, and the angels rejoice!
Christ is Risen, and life is liberated!
Christ is Risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead;
for Christ having risen from the dead,
is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
To Him be Glory and Power forever and ever. Amen!
St John Chrysostom
