Collect
5 Lent

Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

"Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise" Collect for Lent 5
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

After his encounter with the risen Lord on the Damascus Road Paul relinquishes everything that gave him his identity up to that point: "whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ.  More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord."

We too are called to relinquish all that we rely on, surrendering our wills to God whose will for us is perfect.  In that relinquishment we find true freedom.  That is not to say that it is easy!  Relinquishment is a struggle.  God will not take our wills by force, but he will lead us gently down the road to giving our wills over to his will, so that eventually his will can work through us.  We are to empty ourselves to be filled with the Holy Spirit.  We are to release to God those things that we hold onto so tightly: our families, our futures, our dreams - our wants and needs.  So that we can say with Paul: "It is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me.  And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

Here is the prayer I shared at the close of my sermon from Richard Foster's book Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home:
"O Lord, how do I let go when I'm so unsure of things?  I'm unsure of your will, and I'm unsure of myself ... That really isn't the problem at all, is it, Lord?  The truth of the matter is I hate the very idea of letting go.  I really want to be in control.  No, I need to be in control.  That's it, isn't it, Lord?  I'm afraid to give up control, afraid of what might happen.  Heal my fear, Lord.  How good of you to reveal my blind spots even in the midst of my stumbling attempts to pray.  Thank you!  But now what do I do?  How do I give up control?  Jesus, please, teach me your way of relinquishment.  Amen."
