Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

"When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time." Luke 4:13
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

For forty days our Lord was tempted by the devil in the wilderness - forty days!  We can trust in the words found in the Letter to the Hebrews: Heb 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin.  Jesus knows our weaknesses - he came to overcome them for us - not with shock and awe but with sacrifice and surrender.

There are times when our words to Jesus might sound like those of the Tempter: "Why don't you just come in your majestic glory and make everyone believe in you?" "Why can't you just come and smash all the evil?" "Why don't you come and provide food for all those who are hungry?"  We have been told that that day will come - at the end of the age.  But in his mercy Jesus wants to win hearts to him through sacrifice not coercion, for love cannot be forced it can only be won.  In the words of Milton: Jesus held it more humane, more heavenly first by winning words to conquer willing hearts, and make persuasion do the work of fear.

Perhaps our biggest temptation can be to try and fill the Savior's shoes in our own way - to try and overcome evil with violence instead of love, to feed the hungry without feeding them with  the very bread of life, to force faith to propositional truths before introducing people to their eternal friend who is both truth and love.

Whatever our temptations Jesus knows them - he did not succumb to them - rather he overcame them for us.  Take them to him - let love incarnate carry those burdens for you - that is what he came to do.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,
Rev'd Sarah+

LENTEN DEVOTION
Our 40 day Lenten devotional booklets "Seek God for the City" have arrived.  Please pick one up from either narthex or the office and join us in prayer this Lent.
A reminder that some of us have joined others in the DIocese Bible Challenge of Central Florida in "The Bible Challenge" to read through the Bible in a year.  You can subscribe to receive daily emails that include links to the Scriptures to be read and a reflection on that day's Scripture readings here.  A link is also posted daily on the Church of the Good Shepherd Facebook page here

THE JOURNEY: An Anglican Catechumenate
BISHOP GREG'S VISITATION HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO JUNE 23
Those wishing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation with the laying on of hands by a Bishop, or those who wish to be received into the Episcopal Church from a different denomination/tradition, or those who are desirous of making a public reaffirmation of their Baptismal vows are invited to prayerfully consider attending this course.  Some leadership positions in the church require that the person be confirmed (eg vestry).

It will be necessary for participants to commit to regular attendance.  The classes will cover such topics as Scripture, The Book of Common Prayer, Anglican Church History, The Creeds, the Sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion, the Sacramental Life of prayer and amendment of life. There will be a small amount of assigned reading. The final session will be a mini-retreat during which we will explore our giftedness in the Holy Spirit and our stories as we prepare for the laying on of hands.

If you would like to register for this course please print out this form and send it in to the office
The classes will take place on Saturdays from 3:00 - 4:30 pm on the following dates: March 2, 9, 16, 24.  April 6, 13, 27.  May 4, 11.
For more information on Confirmation, Reception, and Reaffirmation please read the section from the Diocesan Handbook found

ANYONE FOR TEA?
On Sunday, March 17 at 4:00 pm Bishop Greg will join us as we celebrate the 130th anniversary of the consecration of the Chapel.  We will walk the perimeter of the Church grounds, praying over the boundaries of the Church, and praying for the light of Christ to expand beyond our boundaries.  After the procession around the property we thought we might gather for High Tea in the back courtyard.  If you can help with this please contact Terri at 407 644-5350 or email her here

MAGNIFY THE LIVING LORD - III
You are invited to share a thanksgiving you have of how the Lord drew you closer to himself.  On these journeys of faith that each of us are on we are called to be an encouragement to each other along the way.  I pray that the Lord will reveal to you how you can be that source of encouragement.  Please call Joy Sutton at (407) 830-5258 or email her here

Sunday Morning Lenten Series
Beginning on Sunday, February 17 Jim Sutton will present a video documentary by GloBible titled "In His Shoes."  The documentary moves between footage of modern day Israel and vignettes of the life of Jesus in the same locations during Jesus' day.  It includes both Biblical narrative and theological discussion by Biblical scholars.
9:30 am in Roberta's Hall: 2/17, 2/24, 3/3, 3/10, 3/17, 3/24

WEDNESDAY MORNINGS IN LENT CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER
Every Wednesday morning during Lent our regular Noonday time of prayer will be expanded.  Beginning on Wednesday, February 20 at 11:00 am we will meet in the Prayer Ministry Room.  From 11:00 am until noon we will explore Richard Foster's book Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home and at noon we will move into the Office of Noonday Prayer.  This will be a  time of deep prayer.  We will lift up all those on our prayer lists slowly and intentionally, we will pray for all the ministries at Good Shepherd and the leadership, and we will spend time in silent prayer.  If you can only join us for Noonday Prayer please do so - this will be an oasis of resting in the Lord in the middle of the week.

WEDNESDAY EVENING LENTEN SERIES
Darryl Bloodworth will be teaching from his book Core Values for the Young (and not so young) Christian
In this book Darryl "addresses the age-old question of why so many of us who profess to be Christians do not live as Jesus taught." He provides "a practical method of examining one's behavior and holding it up to the values that Jesus described in the Sermon on the Mount .... and steps to internalize these values."
Our evenings begin with a soup or pot-luck supper in the Parish Hall at 6:00 pm followed at 6:30 pm by Darryl's teaching: 2/20, 2/27, 3/6, 3/13, 3/20
If you would be willing to help with the Lenten Suppers please contact Terri at 407 644-5350
