Epiphany

O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

"My job is to make clear to everyone just what the secret plan is, the purpose that's been hidden from the very beginning of the world in God who created all things.  This is it: that God's wisdom, in all its rich variety, was to be made know to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places - through the church! This was God's eternal purpose, and he's accomplished it in King Jesus our Lord" Ephesians 3:9-11 (translation by NT Wright in NT For Everyone)
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

The "secret plan," "the wisdom of God" is the Incarnation - the God-with-us plan.  The baby king who was seen first by lowly Jewish shepherds and then by Gentile wise men from the East who brought with them the symbols that revealed the plan: gold for kingship over all the world; frankincense for  eternal priesthood; and myrrh for his eventual death for our salvation.  The riches of his grace for Jew and Gentile alike - God's eternal purpose - accomplished in King Jesus.

Riches that are for us, but not for us to hoard, for we are to shine the light of these riches into the darkness.  We are to arise and shine for the light from on high has shone on us to bring those who walk in darkness into his glorious light.  This is God's eternal purpose for us - his church!

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,
Rev'd Sarah+

A Thank You Note to all those who supported the "Angel" Tree Christmas Gift Ministry

"Dear Church of the Good Shepherd,
Words can't begin to express my gratitude for your generous gifts to help brighten the Christmas of Orange County School children at Apopka Elementary School.  Because of your kindness we were able to help more families this year than we thought possible.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.  May God richly bless each one of you in the New Year.

Let's Read the Bible in a Year together as a Parish
Many in our diocese are doing just that through "The Bible Challenge" website - here
There is also a schedule of readings in .pdf format that can be downloaded here
The readings include an Old Testament reading, a New Testament reading, a reading from the Psalms, and a reading from Proverbs.  It doesn't take long - perhaps 15 - 20 minutes a day - and is incredibly rewarding.  It's not too late to start!

Parishioner/Staff Etiquette/Boundaries
We have some wonderful part-time staff who work very, very hard, and who are also parishioners and who look forward to their time of worship on Sundays - until they are asked to do something in their role as a staff person while they are trying to enter into worship!
The diocesan canons are quite clear: The staff and employees of a congregation shall serve under the direction and control and at the pleasure of the Rector or Vicar" Canon XVI. Section 11
It is not appropriate during their normal work hours for parishioners to ask staff to do tasks for them, unless authorized by the rector, or the person the rector has appointed as their supervisor.  But it is even more inappropriate to ask them on a Sunday when they are not in their staff capacity.  I appreciate your understanding in this - and I know they do also!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS - MISSION TRIP
This summer (probably the first week in July) we will join with a couple of other Episcopal congregations to make a mission trip to New Jersey to help the community recover from Hurricane Sandy.
