22 Pentecost

Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Prayer for the Election

Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States in the election of our President and other officials and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes.

"Go your way, your faith has saved you" (Tyndale)
"Go your way, your faith has made you well." (NRSV)
Go your way, your faith has healed you." (NIV)
Mark 10:52
Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Sunday's Gospel reading (Mark 10:46-52) is sandwiched between the request of James and John to receive places of honor in Jesus' Kingdom, and Jesus' own triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey.

The passage finds blind Bartimaeus sitting, begging by the side of the road. Although without sight he has the eyes of faith to proclaim Jesus as Messiah - Son of David - when he is told that it is Jesus passing by. Rebuked by the people traveling with Jesus Bartimaeus ignores their scorn and is insistent in his request for mercy from the one whom he trusts can save him. Instead of going to Bartimaeus Jesus calls him to himself and Bartimaeus responds immediately, leaving the only thing of value that he owned, his cloak.

At first blush Jesus' question to him seems unnecessary, Bartimaeus is blind after all, but he happily responds with his exact need. Seeing his faith Jesus tells him "your faith has made you well." And leaving his cloak and all his begging paraphernalia behind Bartimaeus follows Jesus on the way.  Bartimaeus' dire circumstances in no way deterred him from trusting in the one who could change them.

True discipleship is revealed in this blind beggar: he recognizes Jesus for who he truly is, other people's rebukes and scorn do not change his focus on Jesus, he is willing to leave everything immediately he is called, he understands that he must speak his deepest needs directly to the one whom he trusts can heal him, and once called he follows, never looking back.

May we be such disciples as this Bartimaeus.

In the Peace, Grace, and Love of our Lord,

Rev'd Sarah+

I am the Good Shepherd.  The Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep ... I am the Good Shepherd.  I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.
