Hurricane Season-Hugo Remembered
Hurricane Hugo Photo September 21, 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of Hurricane Hugo, a CAT 4 storm that passed directly over Sullivan's Island and the Charleston area.  This powerful hurricane left devastation in its wake, pushing tropical force winds and rain through the bulk of South Carolina as it made its way northward.  Post-event it displaced thousands of Lowcountry residents and required months of recovery and clean-up.

For those residents who experienced Hugo first-hand, the hurricane will never be forgotten and almost all declare they would never think to stay behind if the Town was required to evacuate in a future hurricane.

However, for those who did not live through Hugo, the Town invites you to peruse the photos and remembrances this 25th anniversary (Click - photos) (Click- News Video Channel 5) (Click-Storm Info).

Remember the keys to living in the Lowcountry during hurricane season:

(1) Keep your family, home and legal documents ready;
(2) Monitor and comply with County Emergency Operations instructions for evacuations;
(3) Have a post-disaster recovery plan in place (this requires financial and potentially alternate temporary living space plans)
(4) Let your Town know if you or a family member have special needs or special assistance.

Click here for Town resources to assist you with your plans.
    Hurricane season runs June 1st - November 30th
