A LETTER FROM OUR PRINCIPAL...

Dear PFC Families,

As the year moves quickly along, I wanted to take an opportunity to thank you for your tremendous contributions of time, talents, and funds.  I am continually impressed with the passion, and priority that the CHS community places on education. Thank you for your generosity and support this year.  The departments are deeply appreciative of the equipment, materials, and supplies that supplement the instructional program, providing opportunities for inquiry based learning that is critical to engage our students as they gain mastery of the Common Core State Standards.  Your contributions have allowed many staff members to attend conferences, and receive needed professional development in areas that are new, and complex.  Specifically, many of the AP tests are in the process of being updated, and more closely aligned with the CCSS, so your contributions allow us to send teachers to the appropriate summer training sessions.  We eagerly anticipate the laptop carts that will further enable students and teachers to embed technology in student learning, a key component preparing students to be career and college ready.  In April, the 11th graders will take the first Smarter Balanced Assessment, a combination of classroom activities, and online assessments, so the laptop carts will allow us to prepare students for the assessments, as well as for the instructional components outlined in the district technology plan, Forward Learning. Our students will soon be taking a practice online test, and so can you! (Log-on as a guest at  https://login3.cloud1.tds.airast.org/student/V84/Pages/LoginShell.aspx?c=California_PT).  As part of the Forward Learning Plan, our 2015-2016 9th grade students will launch into a 1:1 student : computer learning environment.  So another thank you for helping us prepare for that launch by providing the means for staff and students to increase technology integration this year.

Also, thank you for your input on upgrading our facilities.  This year we have repainted the gym interior, and the gym entrance.  The entrance floor will be replaced soon; an alumni has volunteered to provide a coyote mural; and the replacing of the bleachers project has begun.  At the PFC meeting I indicated that the bleachers would be replaced this summer, however, that is not correct.  This is a yearlong project that includes architectural drawings, city and state approval, etc.  We have begun the process, and anticipate a July 2016 installation.

Thank you to the volunteers who are planning and facilitating the annual PAEC Gala, April 25, featuring JASON ALEXANDER, premiering his new, one-man show, Other People's Stories.  This exciting event will not only be a fundraiser, but also a celebration of the performing arts in LVUSD and the community.  Thank you for purchasing tickets to this event - they are going fast! -  and for your donations to the PAEC Beacon of the Arts Fund.  I could not be more proud to be a part of this community.

I have only touched upon a few of the areas that the PFC supports and contributes to making CHS a success.  Thank you for all that you do, especially for making education a priority and modeling what individuals can do to contribute to the greater good.  I look forward to seeing you at school, and at the Gala!  You're the best!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Foss

Dear Calabasas High School students and parents,

We are excited to announce that we now have the opportunity to be able to focus solely on 10th-12th grade & foreign exchange student transition. Link Crew, a 9th grade student transition class, will be taking the place of Coyote Connect for incoming 9th graders beginning next fall. At the suggestion of the Peer Support officers last year, our school became aware of Link Crew. Students in grades 10-12 generally have a more difficult time transitioning to a new school and require the sharp(undivided) attention of the Peer Support Program to help them feel as welcome and comfortable as possible. The addition of Link Crew allows Peer Support to have more time to focus on the 10th-12th grade students and build that area of our program to new heights. We would like to extend a warm welcome to Kirby Welsh who will be the adviser for Link Crew next year. We are confident that she and her team will continue to help the incoming 9th grade students feel comfortable and accepted at our school.

As a reminder, CHS students can always find Peer Support Counselors at FRIENDS in room H117, which is open every day at lunch. FRIENDS is a place, where students can relax, hang out with other students, meet new friends, and ask any questions students may have, so feel free to stop by.

Please make sure to visit our website at www.chspeersupport.com and like us on Facebook at  https://www.facebook.com/peersupportchs

Thank you!
Sincerely,
The Calabasas High School Peer Support Team

Theater News....

Join us March 11th at 7pm for our Theater Booster meeting - this is still a great time to start to get involved with a great group of parents who love to support our kids and our theater department.

"Funny Girl" The Musical Mar 17 - Mar 21 at 7 pm, plus a matinee Mar 21 at 2 pm.

Tickets for Funny Girl are on sale now!  This is a lavish production about Fanny Brice who broke through the glass ceiling for female comic stardom.  Lacking the traditional beauty expected of a dancing "Ziegfield Girl", Fanny Brice amazed audiences with her talent for being irresistibly funny.  Last year, Calabasas High School Theater's production of "Young Frankenstein" was the talk of the school.  Catch this year's musical and be part of the action.

Tickets available at  http://tinyurl.com/ctbo74w for best seats and also at the box office on the day of the show.

Please come after school and on the next two weekends to help build and install our sets.  It's fun to work with us, you need no skills, and when you come see the show you can say "I helped make that!"

We are also looking for parents to help on the days of the performance selling snacks, taking tickets and helping people to their seats.

For all other inquiries please contact:

"CERT" TRAINING

FEMA: FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY

Preparedness Myths Debunked

Disasters can happen at any time and with little to no warning; that's why being prepared is so important! Some people may rely on old preparedness myths in response to certain disasters, which can prove dangerous. When it comes to disaster preparedness, can you separate fact from fiction?

  • Standing inside a doorway is the best way to stay safe during an earthquake? WRONG! According to FEMA, the current protective action to take during an earthquake is to drop, cover, and hold on. Download the America's PrepareAthon!  How to Prepare for an Earthquake Guide to learn earthquake basics and how to protect yourself during tremors. You can also check out the animated video, When The Earth Shakes, to see how to stay safe.
  • First responders will be able to help everyone during disasters. WRONG! Emergency responders do a great job keeping people safe, but they can't do it alone. It may also be several days before they can reach your area.
  • Remember, being prepared for disasters is a shared responsibility. It takes the whole community working together to effectively prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters and other emergencies.
The County of Los Angeles Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training was developed through FEMA to provide basic fire safety and life saving skills.  Please join us in Agoura Hills, March 3rd, click here for flyer, or in Calabasas, March 19th, click here for flyer.
