CHS PFC eNewsletter

February 20, 2015

Dear Friends of the PFC,

We had a great turn out Tuesday evening at the parent informational meeting "What to Expect When Teens Turn 18: A Legal Perspective."  In attendance were parents of all high school grades.  At the meeting we learned that once our teen turns 18, as a parent, we no longer have any legal rights to their medical records, school records or much of anything else. We also learned that there are documents that can be put in place so that parents can legally assist their child once they are 18. The presenter, Estate Attorney Cathy Miller-Ginsberg, suggested that families review the following documents to help with the transition into adulthood: Durable Power of Attorney, Advanced Healthcare Directive, HIPA Release and FERPA Consent.  We hope that you all take time to look into these important documents and have a conversation with your child. Many thanks to Robin Lutsky for arranging the presentation.

At this time we would also like to remind anyone looking to make a tax donation, to please think about making a donation to CHS. The Donor Drive is an on-going event that concludes at the end of the school year.  Thank you for all of your financial support. We are able to make school purchases that benefit so many thanks to your generosity!

The last two weeks have been short weeks with the long holiday weekend.  Next week we will return to the five day school week schedule.

Many thanks,

Laura Ainsworth

FAFSA and CAL GRANT:  The FAFSA form (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is up and live on FAFSA.gov.  DO NOT GO TO FAFSA.com or FAFSA.org!  This document can be submitted for FREE -- if you go to a website that is charging you to submit the FAFSA you are on the wrong website!  The Cal Grant GPA Verification Form is available in the College and Career Center.  The Cal Grant form is an application for money for any higher education in the State of California for a California resident.  This includes private and public 4-year colleges, all community colleges and vocational school.  The FAFSA must be submitted before the Cal Grant.  Students may bring the Cal Grant form to Mrs. Lutsky in the College and Career Center for GPA Verification. The form is then returned to the student.  IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO MAIL THEIR OWN CAL GRANT FORM TO THE CALIFORNIA STUDENT AID COMMISSION! It is wise to check the FAFSA and Cal Grant deadlines that each college has set. Any questions, please contact Robin Lutsky at rlutsky@lvusd.org.

UPCOMING SAT BOOTCAMP AT CHS:

Catalyst Test Prep is BACK with their SAT BootCamp in preparation for the March 14th SAT! The BootCamp will be held at Calabasas High School on Saturday, March 7th from 9:00am to 1:00pm and Sunday, March 8th from 9:00am to 1:00pm.  Catalyst's BootCamp is a great way to learn all the necessary strategies to find hidden clues to the best answers, write a great essay in 25 minutes, and learn to avoid the most common "trip-ups" for test-takers.  Cost is only $175 in advance -- no walk-ins can be accommodated.  For more information and sign-up please contact Catalyst Test Prep at www.CatalystPrep.com.

Cathy Miller-Ginsberg, Estate Attorney, was our speaker on February 17th for "What to Expect When Your Teen Turns 18: A Legal Perspective."  As soon as your teen turns 18, as a parent you no longer have any legal right to their medical records, school records or much of anything else.  But there are documents that can be put in place so that you can legally assist your child.

Documents suggested:

Durable Power of Attorney: Designate parent(s) as agent to act for their 18+ year old on things like IRS matters, loans, payments, jury summons.  Can allow for full access or limited.  Can be for a long period of time for just for the length of time your child is a student.

Advanced Healthcare Directive:  In the event in incapacity, designates parents to make healthcare decisions on their child's behalf. Can specify child's wishes such as organ donation, cremation or burial, etc. Without it, parents would need to become the court-ordered conservator which could take time.

HIPA Release - child lists parent(s) as having the right to medical records.  Can be specific to one doctor or can create one for all doctors and medical records.

FERPA consent - can be found on most college websites.  Child grants parents the right to view all school records.

Dear Calabasas High School students and parents,

Recently, the Calabasas community suffered a loss. CHS parent, Claudia Mejia, was killed in a car accident on the way to pick up her daughter from Calabasas High School. Calabasas High School and our community have done a tremendous job by coming together to support the Mejia/Fuentes family. Last Monday, students signed a banner during nutrition & lunch in support of the family and last Wednesday there was a community fundraiser held at Fresh Brothers. Both peer counselors and school counselors have been available for students these past two weeks and will continue to be available, for this has affected our school community in many different and lingering ways.

Please make sure to visit our website at www.chspeersupport.com and like us on Facebook at  https://www.facebook.com/peersupportchs

Thank you!
Sincerely,
The Calabasas High School Peer Support Team

"CERT" TRAINING

FEMA: FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY

Preparedness Myths Debunked

Disasters can happen at any time and with little to no warning; that's why being prepared is so important! Some people may rely on old preparedness myths in response to certain disasters, which can prove dangerous. When it comes to disaster preparedness, can you separate fact from fiction?

  • Standing inside a doorway is the best way to stay safe during an earthquake? WRONG! According to FEMA, the current protective action to take during an earthquake is to drop, cover, and hold on. Download the America's PrepareAthon!  How to Prepare for an Earthquake Guide to learn earthquake basics and how to protect yourself during tremors. You can also check out the animated video, When The Earth Shakes, to see how to stay safe.
  • First responders will be able to help everyone during disasters. WRONG! Emergency responders do a great job keeping people safe, but they can't do it alone. It may also be several days before they can reach your area.
  • Remember, being prepared for disasters is a shared responsibility. It takes the whole community working together to effectively prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters and other emergencies.
The County of Los Angeles Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training was developed through FEMA to provide basic fire safety and life saving skills.  Please join us in Agoura Hills, March 3rd, click here for flyer, or in Calabasas, March 19th, click here for flyer.
