CHS PFC eNewsletter

February 6, 2015

Dear Friends of the PFC,

Thank you to those that joined us Monday evening for our monthly PFC meeting!  It was nice to see familiar faces that are able to make it every month, as well as a few new members.  Your PFC has been busy trying to fulfill "Wish Lists" that our teachers and staff have been submitting.  We want you to know that your donations are being spent on items to better your child's education and experience at CHS.  On March 2nd, we will resume back to our 9:30 a.m. meeting time.  We plan to be in the Lecture Hall, however, if we are moved to another location a sign will be posted or please inquire at the front office.

Tuesday night, CHS hosted an Open House at the PAEC.  We hope that those teens planning to enter CHS in the Fall were able to attend and learn something new that our wonderful school is able to offer them personally. We have a very busy and diverse school. There is something here for everyone!

Just a reminder that next week AND the following week are four-day school weeks.  We do not have school on Friday, February 13th OR  Monday, February 16th.  Next week, we will not be publishing a newsletter.

Many thanks,

Laura Ainsworth
Lisa Wayne

COLLEGE AND CAREER

FAFSA and CAL GRANT:  The FAFSA form (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is up and live on FAFSA.gov.  DO NOT GO TO FAFSA.com or FAFSA.org!  This document can be submitted for FREE -- if you go to a website that is charging you to submit the FAFSA you are on the wrong website!  The Cal Grant GPA Verification Form is available in the College and Career Center.  The Cal Grant form is an application for money for any higher education in the State of California for a California resident.  This includes private and public 4-year colleges, all community colleges and vocational school.  The FAFSA must be submitted before the Cal Grant.  Students may bring the Cal Grant form to Mrs. Lutsky in the College and Career Center for GPA Verification. The form is then returned to the student.  IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO MAIL THEIR OWN CAL GRANT FORM TO THE CALIFORNIA STUDENT AID COMMISSION! It is wise to check the FAFSA and Cal Grant deadlines that each college has set. Any questions, please contact Robin Lutsky at rlutsky@lvusd.org.

Essay Contest Open to All Students: The Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara Cancer Support Community is holding an essay contest for students whose lives have been affected by cancer in any way.  Deadline for submission is February 9th, 2015 midnight to dearcanceritsme@gmail.com.  For more information, rules and prizes go to: www.cancersupportvvsb.org.

Join us for this very special and very crucial night of information as Cathy S. Miller-Ginsburg, Esq. presents all you need to know before, after, and during your child's 18th birthday!  THIS EVENT IS FREE FOR PFC MEMBERS, $10.00 FOR NON-MEMBERS AT THE DOOR. For more information, please contact Robin Lutsky at rlutsky@lvusd,org.

"CERT" TRAINING

FEMA: FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY

Preparedness Myths Debunked

Disasters can happen at any time and with little to no warning; that's why being prepared is so important! Some people may rely on old preparedness myths in response to certain disasters, which can prove dangerous. When it comes to disaster preparedness, can you separate fact from fiction?

  • Standing inside a doorway is the best way to stay safe during an earthquake? WRONG! According to FEMA, the current protective action to take during an earthquake is to drop, cover, and hold on. Download the America's PrepareAthon!  How to Prepare for an Earthquake Guide to learn earthquake basics and how to protect yourself during tremors. You can also check out the animated video, When The Earth Shakes, to see how to stay safe.
  • First responders will be able to help everyone during disasters. WRONG! Emergency responders do a great job keeping people safe, but they can't do it alone. It may also be several days before they can reach your area.
  • Remember, being prepared for disasters is a shared responsibility. It takes the whole community working together to effectively prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters and other emergencies.
The County of Los Angeles Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training was developed through FEMA to provide basic fire safety and life saving skills.  Please join us in Agoura Hills, March 3rd, click here for flyer, or in Calabasas, March 19th, click here for flyer.
