Funded staff and teacher development
Funded tutoring during support, after school, and Saturdays
Sponsored Peer Support, Student Clubs and Scholarships
Library acquisitions and support, including funding extended library hours
Fully funded the College and Career Center, Naviance assistance, and College Information

Local Scholarship Opportunity: The Thomas Paine Merit Scholarship, presented by the Woodland Hills Republican Women Federated, is a non-partisan, non-gender, student scholarship open to a graduating senior from high school in the local area.  There are no political-affiliation requirements and award is based on scholastic achievement, extra-curricular activities and honors and constructive thought demonstrated in an essay.  The essay, not to exceed 500 words, must be on the following topic: "What does American Exceptionalism mean to you?" Final due date is March 15th.  For more information, please go to http://www.whrwf.org and click on Scholarship or contact Robin Lutsky in the College and Career Center at rlutsky@lvusd.org.

FAFSA and CAL GRANT:  The FAFSA form (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is up and live on FAFSA.gov.  DO NOT GO TO FAFSA.com or FAFSA.org!  This document can be submitted for FREE -- if you go to a website that is charging you to submit the FAFSA you are on the wrong website!  The Cal Grant GPA Verification Form is available in the College and Career Center.  The Cal Grant form is an application for money for any higher education in the State of California for a California resident.  This includes private and public 4-year colleges, all community colleges and vocational school.  The FAFSA must be submitted before the Cal Grant.  Students may bring the Cal Grant form to Mrs. Lutsky in the College and Career Center for GPA Verification. The form is then returned to the student.  IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO MAIL THEIR OWN CAL GRANT FORM TO THE CALIFORNIA STUDENT AID COMMISSION! It is wise to check the FAFSA and Cal Grant deadlines that each college has set. Any questions, please contact Robin Lutsky at rlutsky@lvusd.org.

Essay Contest Open to All Students: The Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara Cancer Support Community is holding an essay contest for students whose lives have been affected by cancer in any way.  Deadline for submission is February 9th, 2015 midnight to dearcanceritsme@gmail.com.  For more information, rules and prizes go to: www.cancersupportvvsb.org.

ACT/SAT/PSAT: Sorting It All Out for Parents: Bewildered by all those letters that seem to mean testing for college??  You're not alone! Join other confused parents on Wednesday, January 28th at 7:00pm in the CHS Library/Media Center as Susan Levenson, SAT/ACT Guru, sorts it all out.  9th and 10th grade parents take note:  The SAT is changing and its quite an overall! This change will effect the 2015 PSAT too.  Plus the ACT is changing its writing section effective Fall 2015!  This is a FREE event parents brought to you by the College and Career Center and the PFC.  No RSVP required.  For more information, contact Robin Lutsky at  rlutsky@lvusd.org.

 Attention Seniors!

Please come to the counseling office to order your mid-year transcripts.  All Common Application colleges will require you to send your mid-year grades.  Please remember the UCs/Cal States and Non-Common Application colleges only need a transcript if they specifically request it.  The yellow form will be available in the front of the counseling office.  See your counselor with any questions.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  city of calabasas
Mayor Shapiro would like to extend an invitation to all Calabasas residents to the "State of the City" event at the CHS PAEC on February 4th at 7pm.

Dear Calabasas High School students and parents,

CHS Peer Support would like to thank Therapy Dogs International and Paws 4 Healing for letting students play with their dogs on Tuesday at lunch to relax before finals. The 5 therapy dogs were a HUGE success and Peer Support received overwhelmingly positive responses from students. The dogs definitely brought a positive energy to the campus before finals began.

As a reminder, students can always find Peer Support Counselors at FRIENDS in room H117, which is open every day at lunch. FRIENDS is a place, where students can relax, hang out with other students, meet new friends, and ask any questions students may have, so feel free to stop by.

Please make sure to visit our website at www.chspeersupport.com and like us on Facebook at  https://www.facebook.com/peersupportchs

Thank you!
Sincerely,
The Calabasas High School Peer Support Team

Preparedness Myths Debunked

Disasters can happen at any time and with little to no warning; that's why being prepared is so important! Some people may rely on old preparedness myths in response to certain disasters, which can prove dangerous. When it comes to disaster preparedness, can you separate fact from fiction?

  • Standing inside a doorway is the best way to stay safe during an earthquake? WRONG! According to FEMA, the current protective action to take during an earthquake is to drop, cover, and hold on. Download the America's PrepareAthon!  How to Prepare for an Earthquake Guide to learn earthquake basics and how to protect yourself during tremors. You can also check out the animated video, When The Earth Shakes, to see how to stay safe.
  • First responders will be able to help everyone during disasters. WRONG! Emergency responders do a great job keeping people safe, but they can't do it alone. It may also be several days before they can reach your area.
  • Remember, being prepared for disasters is a shared responsibility. It takes the whole community working together to effectively prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters and other emergencies.
The County of Los Angeles Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training was developed through FEMA to provide basic fire safety and life saving skills.  Please join us in Agoura Hills, March 3rd, click here for flyer, or in Calabasas, March 19th, click here for flyer.
