CHS PFC eNewsletter

January 16, 2015

Dear Friends of the PFC:

Please check the Calabasas High webpage, www.calabasashigh.net, for all school information; including finals schedule, bell schedule, days off and email contacts for teachers and other staff.  CHS also has a Facebook page.

Lately there have been a lot of students parking in the main parking lot.  This causes parking problems for parents who come to school to volunteer or have school business, as well as visitors to our campus.  Please remind your student NOT to use the main lot.  Staff spaces are for staff, visitor's spots are for parents and visitors, and PFC spots are for PFC volunteers.  Students who have parking passes must park in the student lot, which is reserved for Seniors and (some) Juniors ONLY.  Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Thanks to all who have donated to our ongoing Donor Drive so far.  We will be thanking you by listing your last name in the next eNewsletter, on our FB page and most importantly by using the funds to enrich the lives of your students and make the CHS environment one to be proud of.

Many thanks,

Laura Ainsworth

FAFSA and CAL GRANT:  The FAFSA form (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is up and live on FAFSA.gov.  DO NOT GO TO FAFSA.com or FAFSA.org!  This document can be submitted for FREE -- if you go to a website that is charging you to submit the FAFSA you are on the wrong website!  The Cal Grant GPA Verification Form is available in the College and Career Center.  The Cal Grant form is an application for money for any higher education in the State of California for a California resident.  This includes private and public 4-year colleges, all community colleges and vocational school.  The FAFSA must be submitted before the Cal Grant.  Students may bring the Cal Grant form to Mrs. Lutsky in the College and Career Center for GPA Verification. The form is then returned to the student.  IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO MAIL THEIR OWN CAL GRANT FORM TO THE CALIFORNIA STUDENT AID COMMISSION! It is wise to check the FAFSA and Cal Grant deadlines that each college has set. Any questions, please contact Robin Lutsky at rlutsky@lvusd.org.

Essay Contest Open to All Students: The Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara Cancer Support Community is holding an essay contest for students whose lives have been affected by cancer in any way.  Deadline for submission is February 9th, 2015 midnight to dearcanceritsme@gmail.com.  For more information, rules and prizes go to: www.cancersupportvvsb.org.

ACT/SAT/PSAT: Sorting It All Out for Parents: Bewildered by all those letters that seem to mean testing for college??  You're not alone! Join other confused parents on Wednesday, January 28th at 7:00pm in the CHS Library/Media Center as Susan Levenson, SAT/ACT Guru, sorts it all out.  9th and 10th grade parents take note:  The SAT is changing and its quite an overall! This change will effect the 2015 PSAT too.  Plus the ACT is changing its writing section effective Fall 2015!  This is a FREE event parents brought to you by the College and Career Center and the PFC.  No RSVP required.  For more information, contact Robin Lutsky at  rlutsky@lvusd.org.

 Attention Seniors!

Please come to the counseling office to order your mid-year transcripts.  All Common Application colleges will require you to send your mid-year grades.  Please remember the UCs/Cal States and Non-Common Application colleges only need a transcript if they specifically request it.  The yellow form will be available in the front of the counseling office.  See your counselor with any questions.

COYOTE WRESTLING IMPROVES OVERALL RECORD TO 8-3
After a few years of rebuilding,  the CHS Wrestling Team has bounced back to it's winning ways.   The team is led by 3 year wrestler and Captain Emerson Painter.  There are 14 wrestlers on a full varsity squad and CHS is able to fill each weight category this year which has improved the chances for victory tremendously.  At 106 pounds freshman Claudia Zimmerman has been a quick study winning all but 4 of her matches. Her record now stands at 15-4.  At 120 pounds sophomore Matt Mandrick has shown his ability to learn quickly by winning several key matches. At 132 senior Luca Reed defeated his Agoura opponent with a first period pin. Captain Emerson Painter improved his record to 6-6.  At 145 Freshman Daniel Foster has continued to improve match after match. At 152 senior Nick Thornton will wrestle his first match on Jan 15. At 160 Sophomore Captain Wolf Wimmer has shown his ability to take on tough opponents and win matches. At 170 Jr. Oscar Serlin has earned a spot on the varsity level.  Senior Nick Fant at 182 pounds has improved his record to 7-4. At 220 senior Luke Wright has consistently won his matches and boasts a 8-3 record. At HWT Edward Keller a Jr. is 11-3. The team started the season with a strong showing against Agoura HS in the first league dual, winning the match 51-28.   Another 10 matches were wrestled over the Winter break bringing the overall record up to 8-3.  This bodes well for the team going into the final 3 league duals on JAN 15, JAN 22 (at CHS) and JAN 29.  The league finals will be held at TOHS this year on Feb 14.

  • Students with flu-like symptoms should stay at home. Flu-like symptoms may include:
    • Fever (100 degrees F. or higher) or feverishness
    • Cough

FEMA: FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY

Preparedness Myths Debunked

Disasters can happen at any time and with little to no warning; that's why being prepared is so important! Some people may rely on old preparedness myths in response to certain disasters, which can prove dangerous. When it comes to disaster preparedness, can you separate fact from fiction?

  • Standing inside a doorway is the best way to stay safe during an earthquake? WRONG! According to FEMA, the current protective action to take during an earthquake is to drop, cover, and hold on. Download the America's PrepareAthon!  How to Prepare for an Earthquake Guide to learn earthquake basics and how to protect yourself during tremors. You can also check out the animated video, When The Earth Shakes, to see how to stay safe.
  • First responders will be able to help everyone during disasters. WRONG! Emergency responders do a great job keeping people safe, but they can't do it alone. It may also be several days before they can reach your area.
  • Remember, being prepared for disasters is a shared responsibility. It takes the whole community working together to effectively prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters and other emergencies.
The County of Los Angeles Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training was developed through FEMA to provide basic fire safety and life saving skills.  Please join us in Agoura Hills, March 3rd, click here for flyer, or in Calabasas, March 19th, click here for flyer.
