Dear Friends:
Thanks for the great turnout at the PFC meeting Monday. Much was discussed and shared. We are fortunate to have so many parents always attend. Just a few of the things discussed monthly: Principal Foss shares school news, updates and answers questions, our Assistant Principals Young, Scifres and Emery come when they can and share event news, sports/facilities updates and academic information. Other information shared comes from Peer Support President Spencer Hurwitz and VP Katie Romanovich, Our College and Career Center Advisor, Robin Lutsky, Booster Club representatives, City News from Mayor Shapiro, and all our latest PFC information such as budget, Donor Drive, deadlines and so much more. Come join us in January!
Please encourage anyone interested in attending CHS to come to our Showcase this Saturday, December 6th from 10am - noon. There will be tours, entertainment and all the information prospective families need when making a decision where to go to high school. CHS is about wonderful opportunities for the best education at a public school. (Please see informational flyer in this newsletter for more information).
Many thanks,
Laura Ainsworth

UPCOMING FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION SESSIONS:
There are two important Financial Aid nights coming up. All parents in all grades are encouraged to attend -- It is never too early to start planning how to pay for college! This year our presenter is Trevor Mizrahi, a financial aid expert and Certified College Financial Planner. Trevor is a regular on the high school and community presentation circuit, helping families save money and find money to send kids to college. Trevor will be making the following presentations:
Part 1, Tues. Dec. 16th at 7:00pm in the Lecture Hall: Financial Aid A to Z. Learn the differences between grants, students loans, scholarships, etc. Find out what's out there for your family.
Part 2, Wed. Jan. 7th at 7:00pm in the Lecture Hall: FAFSA Line by Line. Bring your lap top or other device and learn how to fill out the FAFSA - the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This application can be submitted for FREE -- learn how to conquer this document line by line easily.
These Financial Aid Information Nights are FREE for all PFC members and $25.00 each for non-members. You may also join the PFC for $40.00 and attend these and other events free of charge. For more information about the Financial Aid events, please c ontact Robin Lutsky at rlutsky@lvusd.org for more information.

College and Career Center
UPDATE ON PSAT SCORES:As soon as PSAT scores are delivered to the College and Career Center we will be presenting our Annual Score-Back Night. At the Score-Back Night we will be returning scored PSATs to students followed by a presentation on how to understand and utilize the PSAT score report. PSATs may arrive as soon as tomorrow or as late as the end of December. Watch emails, the CHS website and announcements for more information on PSATs. Questions? Email Robin Lutsky at rlutsky@lvusd.org.
COLLEGE TIP:
After over 100 College Visits this fall, the most heard advice from all the Admissions Directors who visited was: Be yourself. Follow your passions. Be Authentic. An overly polished essay may sound artificial; things done because "they look good on a college application" may appear as though the student did not have a true passion for anything. If you're in 9th grade, hone in on something that makes you happy, gets you involved and makes you interesting -- and don't worry what peers think. Strive for authentic experiences and not ones that you think a college would like to see.

CHS Boys Basketball...
Over the Thanksgiving break, our Boys Basketball teams were busy!
Varsity took 5th place in the 63rd Annual Pacific Shores Tournament at Redondo Union High School. The Varsity defeated traditional powers Mayfair, Inglewood, and Gardena Serra while suffering only a last second defeat to Westchester. Senior Conner Longmire was named to the all-tournament team.
Junior Varsity won the championship of the Valley Invitational Tournament with five consecutive victories over Fairfax, Moorpark, Harvard-Westlake, Notre Dame, and Agoura. The championship game involved an exciting one point buzzer beating tip-in basket by Zach Favaedi to secure the victory over the Chargers. Junior Andrew Parry was named the tournament's most valuable player.
The Sophomore team played well to a 2-2 record while competing "up" a level in the West Torrance JV Tournament.
Congratulations to all of the teams!

WHY SO MANY PRO FOOTBALL PLAYERS WRESTLED IN HIGH SCHOOL
(and why you should too)!
Why do College and Pro football coaches love football players who wrestled in high school? The answer is simple - wrestlers are the best conditioned, mentally toughest athletes in the world. They learn balance, strength and how to use their hands to move another wrestler around. Also wrestlers never quit, they have a positive attitude and they never say never. These are exactly the kind of personality and skill traits that football coaches at the highest level are looking for in a college or pro athlete. There's a saying in wrestling that "once you've wrestled, everything else in life is easy." The point is that you can teach skills, but you can't always teach character. Wrestling builds character whether you're a football player or just a kid who wants to get into shape and make new friends.
YOU CAN STILL JOIN CHS WRESTLING TODAY AND ALLOW YOURSELF TO BECOME THE BEST STUDENT ATHLETE POSSIBLE!
See Coach Falk in M4 during lunch and nutrition.
CHS WRESTLING SCHEDULE TAKES OFF IN DECEMBER!
December is the middle of the wrestling season and it's by far the busiest!
Our first big tournament is the TOHS NOVICE TOURNAMENT on FRIDAY DEC 5 at THOUSAND OAKS HIGH SCHOOL. This tournament is designed specifically for new wrestlers who don't have a lot of experience competing.
Next is the WESTLAKE JV TOURNAMENT on SATURDAY DEC 13. This is a big tournament for the JV kids who will be competing against 24 other schools and the top 6 winners will receive medals.
Next is our cross town rival match against AGOURA HS on THURS DEC 18 at CHS GYM. This is a dual match and is always exciting to watch.
Next is our first Varsity Individual Tournament at ROSEMEAD HS on FRI/SAT DEC 19 AND 20. Only the very best wrestlers win at this grueling all day tournament. Winners receive a belt for outstanding wrestling.
Next is another Varsity Dual Tournament at NEW JEWISH COMM SCHOOL on DEC 29 AND 30. We wrestle 10 other teams head to head. Wrestlers win medals for 1st and 2nd place as well as a Team Trophy for the top 3 teams. Always a lot of fun.
See Coach Falk - afalk@lvusd.org - in room M4 during lunch or nutrition for more info.

 PEER SUPPORT TEAM NEWS...
Dear Calabasas High School students and parents,
CHS Peer Support, along with the Stand For The Silent Club, is hosting a community screening of the movie Bully on December 17th at 7 pm in the PAEC (admission is free). All parents, students (grade 6 and above), and members of the community are invited to our movie screening. The film being shown at the community screening has been modified and is not the R-rated version. Bully follows five stories of children and families who are affected deeply by bullying at school. With intimate glimpses into homes, classrooms, cafeterias, and principals' offices, the film offers insight into the lives of bullied, ridiculed children. Historically, seemingly small instances of labeling and ridicule have catastrophic consequences for the marginalized groups involved. This film brings those "small" instances into the spotlight, creating a space to discuss the effects of bullying. CHS Peer Support aims to help create a bully-free environment both at Calabasas High and within our community. The first step to accomplish this goal is by making our community aware of the negative affects of bullying. Please contact us or visit http://www.thebullyproject.com/about_film for more information about the film.
As a reminder, students can always find Peer Support Counselors at FRIENDS in room H117, which is open every day at lunch. FRIENDS is a place, where students can relax, hang out with other students, meet new friends, and ask any questions students may have, so feel free to stop by.
Sincerely,
The Calabasas High School Peer Support Team

HEALTH OFFICE INFORMATION

Notes From the Health Clerk:
It is recommended that students follow the below recommended practices by the California Department of Public Health for preventing the transmission of Enterovirus and other illnesses:
- Students with flu-like symptoms should stay at home. Flu-like symptoms may include:
- Fever (100 degrees F. or higher) or feverishness
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Body aches
- A feeling of being very tired
- Vomiting or diarrhea
Generally, health officials recommend that individuals who have flu-like symptoms should remain at home and avoid contact with others. They should do so until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever without the use of fever-reducing medicines such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
