Letter from the Headmaster

Last Day of First Quarter. As hard as it is to believe, that is precisely what it says on my school calendar for today. It seems like only last weekend that we were wearing our cowboy hats and red bandanas for Unpack Your Backpack night, but the calendar tells me it was 62 days ago. So much has happened here at Rivermont during those 62 days, a tremendous start to the school year worthy of verse.

How exciting, it's the first day of school -
Mom, I met Respect Man, isn't that cool?

Upper School students to Wisconsin went
A week of climbing and camping there spent.

For students of each age The Run was Fun
But in the end, it was the Imps that won.

Outdoor Learning, much to see, much to do
A trail to hike, a trip in a canoe.

Homecoming - we showed our spirit all right
A dance and a game - Go, Red, Black, and White!

To a team called ISACS we served as hosts,
With students like ours, it's hard not to boast.

Braveheart, Hot Lava, Frisbee - games galore.
PE Night outside - who could ask for more?

First quarter concludes with a project and test
For the rest of the year, please do your best!

Curtis Fee
Interim Headmaster

No School Friday,
October 23rd
Have a great weekend!

MAKE IT BIG IV:
A Steamroller Event!
Saturday, October 24th
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
St. Ambrose University in front of
the Galvin Fine Arts Building

Make it Big IV: A Steamroller Event is an annual community event hosted by St. Ambrose
University and their Printmaking Department. Everyone is invited to help ink up linoleum plates and watch the steamroller in action (rolling over the inked plates to create large  scale prints).

Rivermont 8th grade art students are carving a 32"x36" linoleum plate. This year's theme is
The Future. Professor Joseph Lappie visited our 8th grade art class to demonstrate
printmaking carving techniques and share stunning samples to inspire our students.
Many local high schools and colleges are participating this year. All of the plates will be
printed at St. Ambrose University in front of the Galvin Fine Arts Building: Saturday,
October 24th 10 am -4 pm.

This event will also be a part of the Galvin Fine Art Open House Event so there will be
activities regarding Music (concerts),Theater (performances), Communications (events) and
Art (demos). You can spend some serious time here and it is GREAT for students who are
shopping around for Art Schools.

Rivermont Students Take
1st Place in 3D 3R Sculpture Contest

Congratulations to
Nikhil Wagher and Hannah Laufenberg who took 1st place in their age group for their 3D 3R sculpture titled, Refunction, Dysfunction! They created a prosthetic arm holding hands with a real arm to exhibit the importance and growing advances in prosthetics that help people who have lost limb function in their daily lives. They re-purposed over 20 different materials including items such as copper sheeting, cardboard, aluminum cans, old keys and hair curlers.

Congratulations to Laylon Baucom! His team's sculpture titled, Not Half Bad, took 1st place in their age group for their 3D 3R sculpture. Not Half Bad was created using items such as milk cartons, egg cartons, soda bottles, toothbrushes, and junk food adds. Students juxtaposed the positive impacts of a healthy lifestyle and the negative impacts of an unhealthy lifestyle.

Students had 2 hours to create a sculpture out of re-purposed, recycled, re-useable materials following the theme "Technology for Health". This event took place at the Figge Art Museum on Saturday, October 17th and was organized by Global Awareness Citizens.

All of the students' sculptures will be on exhibit at Bucktown Center for the Arts, 225 E. 2nd Street, Suite 102 & 104, Davenport, Iowa 52801 at the Bereskin Fine Art Gallery & Studio.

Great collaborative efforts and fun at the Figge!

The FAFSA is required by public colleges and universities and many private colleges to
determine the amount of money a family is expected to contribute toward tuition, room and
board and to apply for federal student aid, such as federal grants, work-study, and loans.
