Last year, Rivermont raised almost 12,000 pounds of food, winning our division! This year, need has increased about 10%. The Student Hunger Drive Committee is busy planning events, including Can Sculptures and a Pumpkin Carving Contest. In Lower School, the class that brings in the most food will win a pizza and ice cream party!
River Bend Foodbank asks for a variety of canned food: vegetables, fruit, juice, beans, and canned meat. No perishable items, bulk items, pet food, or soda can be accepted.
The Student Hunger Drive runs through November 8th - help us feed the hungry in the QC! | |
Doin' It With Distinctiveness
Showcasing what sets Rivermont apart
Rivermont students learn to read using the Open Court reading program - a multisensory, whole language, synthetic phonics approach. Rivermont is the only school in the Quad Cities currently using this approach for early reading. The foundation starts in Early School, picks up momentum in Kindergarten, and comes to fruition in First Grade.
During first semester, first graders learn phonic sounds and spellings, blending them to decode words. Students develop familiarity with high frequency phonics and words and build a home library of 118 decodable books that they have mastered. During second semester, student tackle authentic literature, focusing on independent reading and comprehension. Students make the transition from decoding to comprehension to reading fluency seamlessly.
