GBGM Welcoming the Stranger in Europe
Welcoming the stranger can be tough and risky, but also offer the potential for new insights and understanding, writes Thomas Kemper, top executive of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries, in a statement about the current refugee crisis in Europe. The statement was sent to the denomination's Council of Bishops.  Read the statement
First UMC Anchorage Book & Bake Sale
It's that time of year again!  The UMW of First UMC Anchorage will be having their annual USED BOOK & BAKE Sale Saturday, September 26th from 9 AM to 1 PM.  All hardback books are $1 and paperback books $0.50.  Drop by the sale, browse and make a purchase. There is nothing better than a book in hand while you are cozying up for a long winter.  Donations accepted.  Thank you for your support as proceeds go to the UMW coffers sponsoring local missions and outreach, annual pledge and sending representatives to Annual Gathering.

P.S. There are rumors that there will be Rice Krispie treats on hand to go with your coffee!
Fall Rendezvous Meetings
The registration form and information for the upcoming Fall Rendezvous meetings, Professional Church Workers Retreat, and the New Clergy Orientation have been sent out.  If you did not receive your appropriate info and feel you should have, then please contact the conference office.

Members from outside of the Anchorage area will need housing, so if you are able to provide housing for someone for one or two nights, please contact the conference office.  We do not have money in our budget to house people in hotels so we do our best to find local Anchorage homes for people to sleep at.  Sometimes transportation is also a need.  If that is something you can help out with, then let us know!  We appreciate anything you are able to help with.
Be a Part of Worship at General Conference
Your words can inspire the world. You can help shape the worship services at the 2016 General Conference of The United Methodist Church, taking place on May 10-20 in Portland, Oregon. The worship design team for the conference is seeking volunteers to write liturgy, including prayers, calls to worship and litanies.

"If worship - liturgy - is indeed the work of the people, then obviously the people must be involved not only in the worship experience itself, but also in the planning and preparation.  By inviting a variety of voices around the world to contribute pieces of written liturgy, the design team is hoping to expand and deepen our corporate identity as a United Methodist community that truly worships in unity," said the Rev. Laura Jaquith Bartlett, Worship & Music Director of the 2016 General Conference.

A full set of writing guidelines is available, along with the list of specific writing assignments. Take note: the deadline for submitting liturgy is October 1, 2015.

Writers whose work is selected to be included during worship services will retain copyright ownership, and their names will appear in the list of copyright credits printed in the General Conference worship booklet.
The Upper Room Launches New Website to Engage Users in Global Issues
Upper Room Ministries announced the launch of a new online initiative called Moyo ( to help users engage with important global issues like clean water, racial justice, and disaster relief. Visitors of the site will follow a Guided Path (Encounter, Reflect, and Act) to study, reflect, and then physically engage with an issue through multiple offline opportunities. In addition to the Guided Path, visitors can stay informed about current world events through The Feed, a blog-like platform.
"Moyo was created to be an online meeting place for people, especially young adults, who are interested in the intersection between spiritual and secular, prayer and action," said publisher Sarah Wilke. "At Moyo, users can study and reflect on today's concerns, as well as find ways to act and bring about positive change. It encourages both 'being' and 'doing' as essential spiritual practices."
The site features short articles along with multimedia and multisensory experiences, including video, music, photography, and poetry. The content for each theme will be created by experts in the field and by user-generated submissions.
Moyo is the Swahili word for heart.
Help to End Alzheimer's in Honor of Dennis Holway
Susie Holway has formed a team of family and friends who will join the Walk to End Alzheimer's in Reno, NV on September 26 to help end Alzheimer's.  Their team's name is Dennis' Family and Friends.  They are committed to raising awareness and funds in the fight against the nation's sixth-leading cause of death.

If you would like to help support them by making a tax-deductible donation, you can visit Susie's personal fundraising page to make a secure credit card donation online or download a form to mail in with a check. All donations benefit the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association -- and every dollar makes a difference in this fight.

Dennis was diagnosed with Alzheimer's several years ago.  Dennis served several churches in Alaska as well as Superintendent.  They moved to California in 2009.
Veteran's Day Resources
As you plan your fall worship calendar, consider taking a special offering for Imagine No Malaria on Veteran's Day. Some of the veterans in your church probably know about malaria first hand. During World War II, malaria claimed the lives of 60,000 US soldiers. During the Vietnam War, more than 40,000 cases were reported in US Army troops alone. Malaria continues to plague our brave men and women in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Liberia.

Honor veterans in your community by contributing to the fight against malaria.  Find out how here.
