June 2015

While the rain rain rain has been a bit of a bummer we sure have been enjoying our 60 degree days.   Yesterday and today were in the 80s and I thought I was going to melt.   I guess hot weather is unavoidable,  eventually Summer will descend upon Missouri.
We're  in countdown mode for the arrival of our next little granddaughter.  She's due at the end of  the month and were hoping she's a bit more punctual than her big sister was!  I will also be traveling to Conn for a week in July to meet my one year old great niece for the first time.   She Skypes Auntie quite often with the assistance of her gramma or "BAA" as she seems to be calling her.  I can't wait to smooch up on her in person and see my sisters, nieces, and nephews.
We are sneaking in one more short visit to Georgia at the end of next week before the new arrival to spoil Madison.   Of course Pam, Ryan and Andrew will be holding down the fort, as always.

Dink says "Remember, it's two wheeling season so be aware and share the road!  Now let's ride!"
With the amount of Resin we are selling these days it appears your imaginations are in overdrive!   That is wonderful and please feel free to send us pictures of your masterpieces.   We love to see all the creativity out there.  It just amazes me what people come up with!
TECH TALK

As I mentioned, when I did the April Newsletter, I got some great addt'l comments about CA and also about blank breakage, so I thought I'd share some with you.

Antoine B wrote:

" I have experimented for about a year until I got the application down pat.  First of all, the use of paper towels, paper towels soak up a lot of glue and depending of the manufacture of the towel the resin used in making of these towels can cause the CA to get hard rather fast as compared to other brands.  Plus the glue soaks through gluing the fingers to the paper.  One of the guys in our IAP club brought in some craft foam for us to try.  There is no waste, it spreads evenly, can be pushed if it is to thick in certain areas, and it does not react to the CA.  I cut my strips in 1 - 1-1/2"L x 3/4" W strips.  When both sides are coated and dry, I simply snip the end off for a fresh end to use.  At Hobby Lobby the craft foam is sold in 12x18 sheets 5mm thick for $1.27.  A whole lot cheaper than paper towels. I lay out a sheet and commence to stripping them up and putting them in a zipp-loc bag."

" I find that making sure that there
is no residue of CA glue inside your pen tubes after gluing inside your
blank, and after squaring up the ends, you flare the ends with a pen
tube chamfering tool  before assembling on the mandrel."

"I wanted to add a bit about the cracking of blanks. When we are cutting wood and want to avoid tear out we back  our work up with a piece of scrape material. I found that it has helped me while drilling Blanks. I found that if my  disc sander wasn't square I cracked more blanks when pressing the parts together. Once I have spun and finished my pen body and take it off the lathe . I use like a 600 grit or 800 grit and just very lightly touch up the ends to avoid any hard glue that might make my blank split or crack."

Dave H wrote:

"It was interesting to see others have had problems with acrylics cracking.  I use to have this problem as well, even with wood sometimes.  I traced it to an additional problem not mentioned.  When trimming the blanks (I now no longer use a barrel trimming unless it's absolutely necessary, I sand them), I deburr the inside of the brass tube with a brass trimmer used for reloading.  With a burr on the inside, you essentially have a second layer of brass.  Many times it folds over  and the blank cracks.  After deburring I use a tapered punch to expand the end of the blank (same as pressing and removing parts) a bit.  It allows the parts to slip in part way and by the time they get to the place where they tighten up, the blank is much thicker.  If I expand to much, I use the super glue trick."

It's always great to hear about tricks and tips others have found because as we all know, there is not just one right way to create a beautiful pen.  There as basics for success but there is not one way that works for everyone.  It's through sharing of what works and doesn't work that we are all able to better enjoy the great art of turning!

Tracey's Two Cents Worth
   Let's
talk about shipping again.  There are many many things we LOVE about our shopping cart company.   Shipping just happens NOT to be one of them.   The least of evils for us to ship by order cost.  Most of the time this works out.  However, if you order more expensive items it could cause your order to  calculate at a Medium Flat Rate Box vs a Small Flat Rate Box.  I promise promise promise you that Pam looks at each and every order and  if she feels it can ship for less she'll have the guys check it out.  If the guys are packing and they find they can fit it in something smaller they let Pam know.   If we can possibly save you money on shipping we will.   We will also automatically do a refund for you.  It may take a bit for it to show up but we don't wait for you to ask.   We do it automatically.
The other glitch is when shipping is included but it still calculates when you check out.  There are two reasons for this.  1.) Our cart won't let us do  $0 shipping and 2.) If you order several things, they may not fit into that one box and will have to go in two, therefore there will be a shipping charge.   Again, if your item fits in the one box, then we automatically refund any excess shipping.

COMING SOON

I have many of the military patches out on our website and am working on the Navy and then will add in the Army.  Keep an eye on our site.

I'm getting my boxes out there little by little.   If there is one you really want and it's not out there, drop me an email and I'll see what I can do.

I was looking through some drawers out in the shop the other day and found some engravable items.  I'm going to go through them, see what I have and how many, then I'll put on the site an offer engraving on them.
Sigh....I'm stilling trying to find time to put together my discontinued PSI item list but it keeps falling down on the list.   I'll be doing some traveling in July so maybe August...but you never know.

I'm working on finalizing an order that includes Chrome and 24kt Gold Cigar kits so we should have those back in stock in about 60 days.

I've put my order in with my Velveteen Pouch supplier so we should get those back in stock within the next 60 days also.
