November 2014

Dink says we got a cold snap so it's a great day for snuggling with his Angie Kitty!

We will be closed Thursday & Friday (11/27-11/28)

We would like to wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving     Holiday.     Enjoy family time, eat, watch TV  or whatever your family traditions may be, just be sure to have some fun!
My knees are getting better every week.   Hopefully in a few more months, knee pain will be a thing of the past.    I graduated Therapy!  Thank goodness.  Tim has been bringing me to therapy 3 times a week pretty much since June.  I've given him time off for good behavior so he can concentrate on some long overdue woodworking projects.

TIM'S TWO CENTS WORTH

HOW TO MARKET YOUR PRODUCTS

When I first started making pens and key chains along with other little whatnots and doodads, I made quite a few until I got pretty good at it.  Then I gave one of my pens to a guy at my place of employment and had him show it around and tell everyone where he got it from. This person was very popular and was more than willing to show the pen around.

Luckily I worked in a place that had around 300 employees and it did not take long before I had folks coming to me to make pens for them. (At a price of course). In my first month after giving just one pen away I sold around $400.00 worth of slimline pens which I was getting $17.50 each for at the time. That was fourteen years ago.

I worked  in the evenings and whenever I had time to perfect my turning techniques and work on getting the perfect brilliant finish on the wooden barrels that's what I would do.   When you have a great looking product then word of mouth advertising is your best advertising media. You can also have this approach at your church or favorite lodge.

After selling a pen to a customer I kept a log and would check back with them a few weeks later and make sure that they were still happy and ask them if they knew anyone else who might be interested in having a nice pen made for them. Most of the time they knew someone; or knew someone who knew someone. Within a day or so after giving away a business card to pass along I had someone calling me wanting to know if I could make them a pen like the one that I had made for their friend. Of course I can, what do you want?

So it went for months and months. I had built a nice clientele and had created a reputation for myself of creating very nice products with a very short turn around at a reasonable price.

I started making little color picture catalogs on my home PC and started keeping these with me along with my business cards to show folks when It was not practical to carry around my pen portfolio. Yes, I usually had a pen portfolio nearby with finished pens in it which I could sell on the fly or at least show off my work and let the customer design their own. I could and still can make just about anything within reason.

I went to a lot of private beauty salons and asked if I could set up a nice display at the register and I was rarely turned down. Another venue was tobacco shops. When Tracey started making things on her laser, we sold a lot of pens at a local pet store that had paws engraved into them and an "I love my (Dog breed)" engraved on them. The possibilities are endless, you just have to think outside the box and get your stuff in front of potential customers.

Don't forget to keep a supply of business cards beside your display. This is a sales lead generator so a potential customer needs to know how to get in touch with you.

I have mentioned business cards several times and a lot of folks think that they are a waste of time and money. I have had many folks call me out of the blue and say that they got one of my cards from so and so and would like to take a look at what I have to offer. A business card just goes hand in hand with word of mouth advertising. They are cheap to get made and will go a long way to getting your business off the ground.

I am not pitching for Vista Print, but that's who I use and I can usually get pretty good deals from them. Just so you know; by the time you buy card stock, pay for ink and toner, ruin several cards because you loaded them into the printer wrong, etc.......It is just as cheap if not cheaper to have nice professional looking business cards made by a professional printing company. No fuzzy perforated edges and Plain Jane looking cards. Make a statement with your card with your logo and tell folks what you do and how to contact you.

If you can afford to advertise, do so. Be sure though that you are advertising to your target market. Just throwing money into newspaper ads and buying ads in menus at the local teen hangout or the high school yearbook may not be the best use of your funds. Remember, teenagers usually don't have any money. When they do have money, they don't buy pens. Analyze your sales and look at who your largest percentage of sales goes to. Those are the folks that you want to spend money advertising to.

How often have you been at a craft show and you see something you like but want to get in touch with the vendor/maker later to acquire a creation from him or her. Low and behold they do not have any business cards. See, there you go. Get some cards made up. If 90 out of a hundred cards goes into the trash can, just one pen sale from the other ten can more than pay for the trashed business cards.

How did Wood-N-Whimsies get started......Well, that's another story for some other time.

PAM'S TWO CENTS WORTH:

We know Holidays are fast approaching and that means people tend to want boxes to present gifts in.   We try to keep some standard ones in stock.   As many of you know, the way our shipping calculates we've not been able to master a way for you to add boxes on the internet.   We are happy for you to put a comment in the comment/remarks section of your order to add boxes, but Pam would like me to remind you that when you place an order over the internet we do not see your credit card information.   We prefer to have our security set that way for everyone's protection.   If you would like things added to your order you will have had to call us at least once within the effective date of your card and provided us with your credit card information.   We'll then have it on  an encrypted file that we can access and charge your card for the add ons.  You can also request in the comments that we send you a Paypal invoice for the add ons.   Pam will send it in the evening when she does the orders and we'll ship everything out as soon as we get the payment.

TRACEY'S TWO CENTS WORTH:

Remember, although I don't do custom inlay work feel free to drop me a quick email if there is something you'd like to see.

                      (sales@woodnwhimsies.com )

What I do when a request or wish comes in is add it to what I call my "wish list".  I then keep track of how many times a particular theme or item is asked for.   If enough folks ask for something then I put my creative cap on and see what I can come up with.   I'm not going to lie...the list is HUGE!   It takes me many many hours of  looking, thinking, creating, editing and editing and did I mention editing?  That's even before my first burn.   Then comes the tweaking before I'm happy with the way a design looks.  I'm very particular about the fit.  Things probably take me extra long because I have no CAD, programming, or artistic training....just a girl with a desire to create cool looking inlays.          I learn a bit more each year and try to get more detail in my designs.  I try to mix things up for my military folks, folks who like detail and my favorite the Whimsical Theme.       Blanks have been know to go flinging across the office though.
Of course I do get selfish at times and create something that I may like and always get excited when people order it!
Sometimes I'll spend days and days on a design and then once I cut it, I don't like it and it gets filed away.  That's just the way the process works.  So don't give up if you have something you've inquired about.  No promises but you just never know if it's going to show up.   I try to do 2-4 new designs a month but can't always make it happen.   Sometimes I'm filling orders for current inlays for 12 hours
a day and by then, there is no creative juice available for new ideas!
I did want to take a moment to thank you so very much for purchasing my inlays and I hope they bring you as much joy in turning/using them as they bring me in making them.

Just a reminder:  Don't forget to center your tube before gluing.  Don't remove those rubber bands or you'll lose your pieces!  Glue right over them and they'll turn right off when you are turning your blank!

WHAT'S NEW

Here are some new Winter/Christmas blanks that I've completed.   I had a design that completely lost it's mind and it took me all day to fix it, but finally!

We have the Santa Face that so many of you have been asking for.

I've added another cute little Snowman in the Peeking Series.  We now have a Peeking Snowman!

Our cute little Winter Chick will make you smile every time you pick up your pen!

I've added another Military Blank.  This is the Army Signal Corps Insignia.  I'm trying to work my way though the massive list I have of Military requests.

Our very own Pam from Wood-N-Whimsies has been at it again.   We now have a beautiful Blue Jay to add to her hand painted tube collection!

NOTE: Since each tube is hand painted the basic design will be the same but no two will be exactly alike. Currently, these are for the Celtic3, Monet, Gatsby, Sierra type of kit.

Each blank is powder coated and then hand painted. Once the paint cures, each tube is individually cast in polyester resin to create a crystal clear view of the wonderful artwork.

COMING SOON
Pam has sent us a musical note themed painted tube for our review and we love it!  We are pestering her to do some more so we can offer them to you.  They are a combination of a Sticker and painting.  Here is a sneak peak!

Those Gold Caps and Copper Pens you've been calling about are almost here!   We've had several delays due to some demonstration issues in Hong Kong.  It looks like order may FINALLY be moving along.  I'm hoping to have the order in by the middle of next week.   The moment it's in my hands I'll be adding the following back on to our website:
Slimline Pen Caps in Gold
Slimline Center Bands in Bright Copper
Comfort Center Bands in Gold
Slimline Pen Kits in  Bright Copper
                             Large Slimline Cross Clips.

We'll also be getting in some Bolt Action Kits direct from Manufacturer so we'll have a great price on those for you.

FEEDBACK

We definitely appreciate  our customers checking with us first when a new item hits the street. This is what generally drives our decision to carry or not carry a new item. How many people want it? If nobody is asking for it, then it must not be very popular, so why bother investing in it.

We are a small company.  We are still growing but as with anything else, to do it right takes time. If you jump in too fast you can find yourself unable to pay for the loans and out of business before you even get started.

If there is something you would like to see us carry, please let us know via a phone call or by sending us an email, we will do our best to accommodate your wishes.

Thanks for reading and have a great day
