It seems that my emails of the last few months have
Dink says, "Those pesky robins don't stand a chance at getting my bees with me and my pack on apiary patrol".
all started out with something to do with the crappy weather and how cold it has been and the beginning of this month is not much different. We are having a very late start to
Spring this year. Come on warmer weather, this weekend is supposed to be a break through to warmer days. Let's hope the cold will be behind us for this year.
Dink and I have gotten ourselves a couple of bee hives to tend to this summer. We do not expect any honey this year. We just want to build up the colony so that they can survive the winter and we look forward to a small harvest next year.

TECH TALK
Turning & Finishing Inlay Blanks

An article was published in the Woodturning Design Magazine June 2014 issue on assembling inlay blanks. I have been inundated with calls and emails from folks who have been trying the process described and everyone wants to know more about Kurt Hertzog's method of assembly. ????? Some saying they can't get it to work and others saying that I should do a video showing how to do it his way so they can understand it better.
I have bought a copy of the magazine and have read the article and as he says in the article that he does not proclaim that the way he does them is THEway but is
ONEway, I agree with him on this point. The way I assemble, glue and turn inlays is different than his way and different than ways I have seen in other instructional material and I will stick by the way I do them. It works for me and that is what I teach.
Our video has received almost 19,000 views and we have had an enormous amount of positive customer feedback and response to it. I stand by my method, other methods I have seen and read about leave too much chance of losing parts and breaking the blank.
On one video I saw on YouTube, the blank changed several times during the process of recording. I suspect that was because the blanks had been damaged several
times during the filming of the procedure, I guess that the procedure did not work out so well. I can't think of any other reason for switching blanks out during the process.
The biggest no-no in laser inlay pen making is that you should never, never, ever use a pen mill to trim the ends of your inlay blank, PERIOD.
Don't fret too much, when you order Tracey's inlays they arrive dry fit together and already rubber banded. You just have to verify your tube is properly centered and apply thin CA glue! The rubber bands will turn off with your skew chisel.
WHAT'S NEW

If you have already checked out the items that are on
The MD Caduceus Inlay Blank
sale this month, you have seen Tracey has three new inlays this month.

First, the medical doctor's caduceus which has been asked for for a long time, has been perfected and is ready to go. Tracey can make the blank in any color combination you want. It is shown with yellow dyed maple on blue dyed maple but as long as we have the color, she can make it as you want.
She has put the letters MD above the emblem but it can be anything you want with a limit of four characters.

The #1 Grandma Inlay Blank
Her next creation which came as a result of a customers special request is the #1 Grandma. Before you start drafting emails with inquiries about when the #1 Grandpa is coming out, let me just say, it will be released very soon. Tracey just ran out of time this month to get it finished and ready for sale in the newsletter. Her inlay blank production keeps her very busy for most of the day lately.

Finally, she has a Police Officer blank with the image
The Policeman Protect & Serve Inlay Blank
of an officer with the words "protect and serve" under the image. She has some other ideas in the works, please check the site regularly to see what she has next.
Curtis has created a color combination in commemoration of the Missouri State Bird, the bluebird. The blank is a wonderful swirl of blue, orange and white. I guarantee that you will love it.

American Flag Slimline Pen Clips In Gol & Chrome
We are now carrying the American Flag pen clips from PSI Woodworking
. These clips are for the slimline kits or any kit which uses the same 7mm clip and cap as the slimline such as the Comfort and Anelli kits.
POLY52 Polypearl Blank
Be sure to check out the SpectraPly Ten Piece Grab Bag. This is a really great deal.
COMING SOON

As stated above, the #1 Grandpa will be released soon. We also have an order coming from the manufacturer which should, I use the word cautiously, should be here late this month. In that order are the gun metal cigar pans that we have been out of stock on since before Christmas. We will have them back in stock soon.
Tracey is also working on a blank commemorating our firemen. Watch for that on the Inlay Page soon.

FEEDBACK

Tim, I want to thank you for the wonderful YouTube video you made on turning the inlays you sell.. I must have watched it five or six times , at least, prior to turning my first "woodnwhimsies" inlay.  Before I discovered your video, I used other tools but mostly sandpaper.  You know the results I was getting.  First having to put together the inlay kit itself with my 73 y/o eyes and hands.  Then the woods bleeding together, etc.  It was most frustrating.

Two days ago I put one of your inlays on my lathe and did the ABC of skew tool use.  WOW!  Thanks Tim.  what a smooth finish, then I used the CA glue finish, you suggested and completed the blank to my utter amazement.

I belong to a wood working club and have told other turners in my area to try your products.  I know some will do so.

Thanks again, Tim.

Joe Weigandt

PS I keep my turning tools sharp and my tool rest smooth and free of yuuk.

Thanks for subscribing everyone and I hope you enjoy reading our monthly two cents worth to the wood turning world.
