Wood-N-Whimsies Newsletter                  January 2013
Greetings!
Dink says, "Happy New Year everybody from Me and my little pack".
"My Rat Terrier brother was camera shy this day and didn't make it in the picture, but it's all about ME anyway!"

Happy New Year to our customers. This will be our tenth year in business and it has been our absolute pleasure to provide you with some really great pen turning supplies.
We have come a long way and plan to keep it up for at least another ten years. We have over 10,000 customers in our database and they come from all over the globe, we love you all. If there is anything that we can do for you within our powers, we will be glad to assist you.
I apologize for the tardiness of the newsletter this month, December was extremely busy and did not leave much time for writing and making videos.
It's that time of year again. Yes, the US Postal Service will be raising their shipping rates again at the end of this month. The rates will be going up an average of 10% across the board and a couple of the shipping options will be going by the wayside. We will still be able to take advantage of flat rate boxes which is our primary means of shipping.
As we have always done, If you pay more for your internet order in shipping than the box we actually shipped your order in, we will refund you the difference. We do not and will not profit from the shipping paid.

Tracey's two cents worth:

After that CRAZY Inlay sale in December,  I don't have the energy to spare two cents worth!    I had no idea that during that six day sale I would make almost 400 inlays.   That's more 28 hour straight shifts than I care to work in a week.  Thanks for loving my stuff so much!   I have GREAT plans for lots of New designs in 2013
TECH TALK
How To Make A Closed End Desk Pen / Closed End Blank

For the past two newsletters we have featured ideas on doing something different with the Slimline Pen Kit. This month we are continuing the series with a desk pen.
With this pen we will show you "a way" to do a closed end blank. I'm sure that there are a dozen different ways to do it and everyone has a little different technique or a different tool. Please just use the information if you need it and know that I am always eager to learn a new way, your feedback is welcome and I will happily share it in next month's newsletter. I have been turning for thirteen years now and I'll be the first to admit that I do not know it all, I still learn something new almost everyday.
The bottom blank of our desk pen is turned similarly to the standard slimline pen using the 7mm bushing for the tip just like the last two pens we have done in our series of videos. The top blank will get a bit of a different spin to it though as you will see.
Here again, you can make the barrels as thin or as thick as you like. You might not want to get too thick on the tip end of the bottom blank since we want our little beauty to fit into a standard desk pen holder. I use PSI's Universal Executive Swivel Funnel, item number PKUFUN, which we sell here at Wood-N-Whimsies.

You will need a slimline pen kit, a set of slimline 7mm bushings, and medium or thick CA glue. The same old stuff we need to do a slimline pen. We will also need an adjustable mandrel with the non threaded end ground off to a point for making the closed end blank. Click the photo link above and we will get to it.

Making A Pen Using A Scalloped Blank
Click The Image Above To View This Video
Uncle Tim has been in his workshop for the past few months, yes months, working on  perfecting techniques for making Scalloped Pen Blanks. He has succeeded in making the jigs and getting all the measurements, angles and diameters absolutely perfect.
He has released his first set of colors in these incredible blanks. The selling price for these blanks is $19.99 for each blank. Just to be clear, that is for one single blank and not for a pair. With the purchase of two or more blanks the price drops to $18.00 per blank. These blanks are intended for pen kits with large diameter tubes. They are not recommended for Slimline Kits or any other small diameter tube kit.
An incredible amount of time and effort went into making these
blanks not to mention the hundreds of hours and dollars that went into designing and making jigs to produce a highly detailed and superior quality
product that is made right here in the good ole USA.
We will be offering three different color combinations to start with and as they become more popular the color choices will expand.
We highly, let me underline that, HIGHLY, recommend using a sharp skew chisel or a sharp fingernail gouge to turn these blanks. They are made from polyester resin which has a tendency to be a tad bit temperamental. A dull scraper will induce chatter marks which will not make for a nice turning not to mention a few dollars on the floor in  broken bits and pieces.
Do not use a brad point bit to chase the 1/4 inch hole in them, use a jobber bit for best results. You can also use pilot point bits if you have access to them.
Each blank comes with a piece which matches the scallop color along with two pieces of the matching metal accent so you can add
the length you need to accommodate longer blanks if needed or to just add a little extra bling. You can also shorten the blank if you need to and add the accent piece in.
Uncle Tim and I have produced a video in which we will show and explain a few idiosyncrasies that you need to know to be successful. These blanks are not recommended for beginner turners. We also DO NOT recommend that you use these blanks on slimline kits. When turned too thin, the scallop will get so small that you might as well have just used a regular piece of wood or acrylic.
If you need other colors made just give us a call and we will see what we can do for you. Polyeste
r resin can be cast in virtually any color or combination of colors.

We have another great new Poly Pearl color: Warning------Use a very sharp skew or very sharp fingernail gouge to turn these blanks. A chattering scraper type tool will pit, chip and destroy these blanks.
The blank pictured to the left is called Precious Metal. It is a swirl of gold, silver and copper.

We have received a supply of Bolt Action Pen Kits   from PSI.

Until we get a supply of them directly from the manufacturer we will be matching Penn State's price on them. Our supply of these kits is extremely limited, so don't put off ordering too long, they will go very fast.
We have them in the gold and gun metal finishes only.

FEEDBACK

We asked for some pictures in our last newsletter of some of the creations you have come up with in your efforts to expand you skills at decorating your pens up a little. Here are a couple of the pictures we got back with some really impressive results.
As you can see you are not limited to using these techniques on slimline kits alone.
They can be used on virtually any pen kit. The picture on the left is a Cigar Pen Kit with some really fancy details. The pen features not only an added band, but with several bands added in series at different angles and also some fine scalloped details. It is made from polyester resin and thin strips of aluminum to really catch your eye.
Simple or fancy, you can change the whole look by just adding a little bling and making your workmanship stand out from the crowd.
Send us pictures of you desk pen creations for next months newsletter. We are anxious to see what you have come up with.

Thanks for reading our newsletter and we look forward to serving your pen turning needs in the coming year. Please keep the feedback coming, we like to hear about what our customers are working on.
